Many of his films have never been properly distributed in the US and are unavailable on home video.  ALSO LIKE LIFE: THE FILMS OF HOU HSIAO-HSIEN begins on Friday, March 20th with shows at both the Grand Illusion and NWFF.  The night before, on Thursday the 19th at 7pm, we'll be hosting a kickoff showing of Hou's early feature THE BOYS FROM FENGKUEI in our Screening Room, which isn't screening as part of the proper retrospective. The film will be introduced by local critic, friend of the store, and Asian cinema scholar Sean Gilman, and best of all, it's FREE! Here's the full schedule of movies running at the GI and NWFF. Five films are screening in total, and each will play at both venues: Fri 3/20: A TIME TO LIVE AND A TIME TO DIE @ Grand Illusion Cinema (7PM) Sat 3/21: DUST IN THE WIND @ Northwest Film Forum (5PM) Sun 3/22: GOOD MEN, GOOD WOMEN @ Grand Illusion Cinema (5PM) Mon 3/23: FLOWERS OF SHANGHAI @ Northwest Film Forum (3PM) Mon 3/23: A TIME TO LIVE AND A TIME TO DIE @ Northwest Film Forum (7PM) Tues 3/24: DUST IN THE WIND @ Grand Illusion Cinema (7PM) Weds 3/25: MILLENIUM MAMBO @ Northwest Film Forum (8PM) Thurs, 3/26: FLOWERS OF SHANGHAI @ Grand Illusion Cinema (7PM) Fri, 3/27: GOOD MEN, GOOD WOMEN @ Northwest Film Forum (8PM) Sat, 3/28: MILLENIUM MAMBO @ Grand Illusion Cinema (4:45PM) Visit the Grand Illusion's or the Film Forum's Websites for advanced tickets to any of these films!   ALSO ALSO LIKE LIFE: More of the Films of Hou Hsiao-hsien! This Hou retrospective is basically the repertory film event of the year here in Seattle. We're tremendously lucky to get these films here in town. But many of Hou's films aren't a part of the retrospective, so here at Scarecrow we've decided to fill in a few of the blanks.  In addition to the kickoff screening of THE BOYS FROM FENGKUEI on the 19th, once the full series at Grand Illusion and NWFF is complete, we'll be screening a few of the remaining titles here in our own Screening Room! Mon 3/30: CITY OF SADNESS (6:30PM) Tues 3/31: THE PUPPETMASTER (6:30PM) Mon 4/6: GOODBYE SOUTH GOODBYE (7PM) Tues 4/7: CAFE LUMIERE (7PM) ALL of the Screenings here at Scarecrow are of course absolutely FREE! We can't wait for everyone to see all of these fantastic films.   But Wait!! There's also a PARTY!! WOOO!! To celebrate this amazing series and partnership, the unstoppable independent film triumvirate of Scarecrow Video, the Grand Illusion Cinema and Northwest Film Forum are teaming up for a combined member/volunteer party before the 8pm screening of MILLENNIUM MAMBO at the Film Forum. Everyone who is a member or volunteer at any of these three independent powerhouses gets a free drink, in thanks for your support! Be sure to bring your membership card(s) and represent with pride. In this true story, Steve Carell is amazing as John Du Pont, a dangerously eccentric billionaire who becomes obsessed with two brothers (Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo, also fantastic), both Olympic medal-winners for Wrestling. This is a bleak and deliberate thriller about our attraction to power and the lengths to which people will go to obtain and keep it.    At the opposite end of the spectrum is SPACE DANDY (@ BLU SALE), the latest series from legendary anime creator Shinichiro Watanabe, the mad genius responsible for COWBOY BEBOP and SAMURAI CHAMPLOO. This is a completely bonkers show, constantly experimenting with genre and style, with, of course, a terrific soundtrack. You'll get hooked immediately.    As for the rest, don't forget to check out the following: There's the MUSICALS COLLECTION (@ BLU SALE) 4-pack of classic musicals on blu-ray featuring SINGIN' IN THE RAIN as well as three brand new-to-blu titles, KISS ME KATE (@ BLU 3D SALE), THE BAND WAGON (@ BLU SALE), and CALAMITY JANE (@ BLU SALE). At least it's going out with a healthy stack of New Releases.   BLU = Also available to rent on Blu-ray disc 3D BLU = Available for rent on lovely 3D Blu-ray, though you must have a 3D TV to experience the full glory @ = Available for sale in the store (but we can special order anything, see us for details) SALE = Click this link to purchase select titles from our online store.   First up is WHIPLASH (@ BLU SALE), Best Picture nominee and winner of 3 other Oscars this past weekend. Miles Teller is a young drummer enrolled at a prestigious musica academy who becomes entangled in a high-pressure mentor/student relationship with a very demanding teacher played by JK Simmons (who won Best Supporting Actor for his performance). The less said about WHIPLASH the better, except that it's less a music drama than a thriller.    Then, the Heroes at the Criterion Collection have released the bizarro animated classic WATERSHIP DOWN (@ BLU SALE). Based on Richard Adams' beloved novel, it's about a warren of rabbits who must find a new home when their shelter falls under attack from encroaching land developers. If you're unfamiliar with the film, it's way freakier than you'd expect any film about cute bunnies to be, violent and disturbing, but it's also beautifully animated and rich with detail.   Finally, Milestone has released a restored version of the essential (and previously quite difficult to see) ethnographic "documentary" IN THE LAND OF THE HEAD HUNTERS (@ BLU SALE). Way back in 1914, Filmmaker Edward S. Curtis was one of the first people to document the rituals of the Kwakwaka'wakw tribe of the Pacific Northwest. This film is a partly staged recreation of one of the tribe's folktales, but it also includes gorgeous early footage of authentic rituals and art. Don't miss this important piece of early cinema.   As for the rest, don't forget to check out the following: Criterion also releases FELLINI SATYRICON (@ BLU SALE), the Italian master's uniquely surreal trip into Roman history. There's Ang Lee's breakout film EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN (@ BLU SALE). Don't miss the under-appreciated musical drama BEYOND THE LIGHTS. Shirley Clarke's landmark meta-documentary THE CONNECTION (@ BLU SALE) has been lovingly restored by Milestone. On the catalog blu-ray front, there's Frankenheimer's Elmore Leonard adaptation 52 PICK-UP (@ BLU SALE), William Friedkin's early caper film THE NIGHT THEY RAIDED MINSKY'S (@ BLU SALE), and Robert Aldrich's WWII adventure TEN SECONDS TO HELL (@ BLU SALE). For horror aficionados, we've got the US Theatrical cut of Bava's BLACK SUNDAY (@ BLU SALE), Larry Cohen's cult thriller GOD TOLD ME TO (@ BLU SALE), and slasher staple NEW YEAR'S EVIL (@ BLU SALE). The TV tip also brings us the final season of SONS OF ANARCHY (BLU). Last but not least, for the kids, there's Marvel's BIG HERO 6 (@ BLU SALE).   Here's the full rental list:   Beyond the Lights (2014) Blood Red (1989) Candle for the Devil (1973) Dangerously Close (1986) Eat Drink Man Woman (1994) @ BLU SALE Fellini Satyricon (1969) (Criterion Collection) @ BLU SALE God Told Me To (1976) @ BLU SALE Green Street 3: Never Back Down (PAL / Region 2) Harmony Heaven / Over She Goes (1938) (PAL / Region 2) Horrible Bosses 2 (2014) BLU  In the Land of the Head Hunters (1914) @ BLU SALE Love Me (2013) Master (2014) Music Hath Charms / Songs You Gave Me (PAL / Region 2) Outside Bet (2012) Slaughter Nick for President (2012) Ten Seconds to Hell (1959) @ BLU SALE Tiger and Bunny: The Rising (2014) Traitors (2013) Vanish (2014) Watership Down (1978) (Criterion Collection) @ BLU SALE Whiplash (2014) @ BLU SALE   NEW DOCUMENTARIES American Arab (2013) Connection (1962) @ BLU SALE Daughters of Dolma (2013) Mass Extinction: Life at the Brink Return to the Wild (2014)   FAMILY NEW RELEASES Big Hero 6 (2014) @ BLU SALE   NEW BLU-RAY 52 Pick-Up (1986) @ BLU SALE Black Sunday (1960) (US Theatrical Cut) @ BLU SALE New Year’s Evil (1980) @ BLU SALE   NEW TV ON DVD Midsomer Murders: Season 16 Sons of Anarchy: Final Season BLU    That'll about do it for this week's stack of new titles. Will BIRDMAN (@ BLU SALE) take home the Best Picture Oscar this Sunday?    One of our favorite films from last year is also one of the most beautiful. Of course, that's not anything new when you're talking about Studio Ghibli. Their latest film (and one of their last) is the gorgeously animated Japanese folktale THE TALE OF THE PRINCESS KAGUYA (@ BLU SALE).   We'd also be remiss in not mentioning the release of another installment of one of our TV obsessions. The great and grisly GAME OF THRONES: SEASON 4 (@ BLU SALE) is out today!   As for the rest, don't forget to check out the following: More Oscar nominees, with Eddie Redmayne as Stephen Hawking in THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING (@ BLU SALE), and the fantastic Roger Ebert documentary LIFE ITSELF (@ BLU SALE). Did you somehow manage to survive Christmas without seeing THE INTERVIEW (@ BLU SALE)? Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are back together in DUMB AND DUMBER TO (BLU). Tommy Lee Jones comes back to the director's chair with his feminist frontier western THE HOMESMAN (@ BLU SALE). Nicolas Cage is a secret agent in THE DYING OF THE LIGHT. Everybody loves Bill Murray, so that means you have to watch ST. VINCENT (@ BLU SALE).  Tons of catalog blu-ray releases this week! The Heroes at the Criterion Collection have an HD upgrade of Ozu's final film, AN AUTUMN AFTERNOON (@ BLU SALE). Warner Archive has Julie Christie in FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD (@ BLU SALE). Billy Wilder's KISS ME, STUPID (@ BLU SALE) was actually condemned by the Legion of Decency! The great Jacques Rivette's LE PONT DU NORD (@ BLU SALE) gets a long overdue release. There are a couple of Roger Corman exploitation classics with THE WILD ANGELS (@ BLU SALE) and THE PSYCH-OUT (@ BLU SALE). Frankie and Annette hit the surf in BEACH BLANKET BINGO (@ BLU SALE) and MUSCLE BEACH PARTY (@ BLU SALE). Ringo Starr made a caveman picture, appropriately called CAVEMAN (@ BLU SALE). And fans of esoteric horror should get a look at CULT OF THE DAMNED (@ BLU SALE), the trippy Robert Englund version of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (@ BLU SALE), and found-footage anthology V/H/S: VIRAL (BLU). Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie play a couple mourning the sudden accidental death of their young daughter, and retreat to Venice to get themselves back together. Trouble is, she starts believeing that they're being haunted by the little one's ghost, and he starts having terrifying premonitions that seem to be involved with a series of local murders. Roeg's allusive editing and repeated visual motifs make this a beautiful and confoundingly suspenseful classic.   Speaking of tumultuous marriages, take a look at the blackly comic FORCE MAJEURE (@ BLU SALE), about a middle-class couple whose relationship unravels after a near-accident at a ski resort.    And then there's NIGHTCRAWLER (@ BLU SALE), another super-black comedy, this one about a sociopath (played with a genuinely creepy nervous intensity by Jake Gyllenhaal) who stumbles into a lucrative and successful career as a freelance news photographer, chasing car accidents and all other manner of nasty crimes around the city to scrape up a quick buck.    As for the rest, don't forget to check out the following: Disney has finally released the wonderful 101 DALMATIANS (@ BLU SALE) to blu-ray. Local filmmaking luminary Lynn Shelton has a new film, LAGGIES (@ BLU SALE). Those Criterion heroes also bring us Jean Renoir's 1936 short A DAY IN THE COUNTRY (@ BLU SALE). Little seen 1942 musical SYNCOPATION (@ BLU SALE) has been lovingly presented on blu-ray. Jeremy Renner plays the real-life reporter that blew the whistle on the CIA/crack connection in KILL THE MESSENGER. Kino Lorber has THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING, THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING (@ BLU SALE) out...In Soviet Russia, blu-ray watches you! The Daily Show's Jon Stewart wrote and directed ROSEWATER (@ BLU SALE), the true story of a journalist imprisoned in Iran. Ethan Hawke time travels in PREDESTINATION (BLU). HBO's OLIVE KITTERIDGE (BLU) is a fantastic adaptation of Elizabeth Strout's novel. Long beloved children's book ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD VERY BAD DAY (BLU) has also been turned into a movie. And for horror fans, Scream Factory has two goofy double feature discs, LOVE AT FIRST BITE / ONCE BITTEN (@ BLU SALE) and VAMPIRE'S KISS / HIGH SPIRITS. Then there's classic German zombie artsploitation with NEKROMANTIK 2 (@ BLU SALE), and finally VIDEO NASTIES: THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE PART 2 chronicles Great Britain's censorship of horror films in the 70s and 80s.
