We think no matter where you fall in the debate about this movie, it's still an often moving account of the physical and emotional consequences of war, and Clint Eastwood continues to make risky, idiosyncratic films unlike anyone else's.   Then, the Heroes at the Criterion Collection bring us Charlie Chaplin's final American film, LIMELIGHT (@ BLU SALE). He stars as an aging comedian who rescues a suicidal ballerina, and together they try to find meaning in their lives and support each other while trying to navigate their way through show business. Definitely a late masterpiece from Chaplin.   As for the rest, don't forget to check out the following: Criterion also has the famous Bette Midler drama THE ROSE (@ BLU SALE)...did you know Bette doesn't even sing that song in the movie? Shakespeare gets transplanted to a modern day biker gang in CYMBELINE (BLU). Best Foreign Film nominee LEVIATHAN (@ BLU SALE), from Russia. Two fantastical comedies from ex-Pythoners: ERIK THE VIKING (@ BLU SALE) and YELLOWBEARD (@ BLU SALE). Take another trip back in HOT TUB TIME MACHINE 2 (BLU). IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE (@ BLU SALE) heavily inspired the original ALIEN. Cult favorite LADYHAWKE (@ BLU SALE) arrives on blu-ray. Two versions of a Mario Bava classic, THE EVIL EYE / THE GIRL WHO KNEW TOO MUCH (@ BLU SALE). Sam Peckinpah's final film THE OSTERMAN WEEKEND (@ BLU SALE). We also got special Disney Movie Club blu-rays RETURN TO OZ and SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON in for rent. And for the TV lovers we've got extra-cheap complete sets of NEWSRADIO (@ SALE) and THE LARRY SANDERS SHOW (@ SALE), as well as the second season of ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK (BLU).   Here's the full rental list:   American Sniper (2014) @ BLU SALE Angel Baby (1995) Before I Disappear (2014) Blue Room (2014) Cymbeline (2014) BLU Evil Eye / Girl Who Knew Too Much (1963) @ BLU SALE Girlhood (2014) Hot Tub Time Machine 2 (2014) BLU It! Although not without its moments of sweetness, it's ultimately pretty quietly devastating, and reportedly influenced Ozu's masterpiece TOKYO STORY.   There's also a brand new blu-ray of Polish filmmaker Jerzy Skolimowski's 1982 film MOONLIGHTING (@ BLU SALE), starring Jeremy Irons as a refugee from communist Poland living in London. Until now this film has been available only on a really crummy cropped DVD, but now there's this gorgeous new version, so make sure you check it out.   Finally, one of the greatest cult erotica films of all time has been lovingly restored and released on blu-ray. Severin presents Jess Franco's legendary VAMPYROS LESBOS (@ BLU SALE), completely uncut in a gorgeous new transfer. What starts out as a simple sapphic spin on the Dracula tale ultimately becomes a full-on rejection of the patriarchy, and it features one of the all-time best movie scores ever recorded. This is an unmissable release. Be warned, this trailer might be sorta NSFW.   As for the rest, don't forget to check out the following: Julianne Moore's Oscar-winning performance in STILL ALICE (BLU). Two cult classics from Arrow: 1968 Yakuza thriller RETALIATION (@ BLU SALE) and Walerian Borowczyk's insane THE STRANGE CASE OF DR. JEKYLL AND MISS OSBOURNE (@ BLU SALE). Johnny Depp is a bumbling art thief in MORTDECAI (BLU). Michael Mann's latest film BLACKHAT (@ BLU SALE) is one of his very best, despite what you may have heard. Another Jess Franco classic from Severin: SHE KILLED IN ECSTASY (@ BLU SALE). Even more horror with Roger Corman's PREMATURE BURIAL (@ BLU SALE), and Ray Milland in the awesomely titled X: THE MAN WITH THE X-RAY EYES (@ BLU SALE). Hitchcock's other Du Maurier adaptation JAMAICA INN (@ BLU SALE). Everyone's favorite summer camp comedy WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER (@ BLU SALE) finally lands on blu-ray. We've got a terrific documentary about beloved rock club The Funhouse called RAZING THE BAR (@ SALE). Old school stop-motion animation classic THE PUPPETOON MOVIE (@ BLU SALE) is out on blu. And last but not least, the entire original 70s BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (@ BLU SALE) series, either in an 8-disc blu-ray set or an 18-disc collector's package loaded with extras!   Here's the full rental list:   Batman Unlimited: Animal Instincts (2015)  Blackhat (2015) @ BLU SALE Cobbler (2014) BLU Extraterrestrial (2014) BLU Jamaica Inn (1939) (75th Anniversary) @ BLU SALE Jester’s Supper (1942) Lilith, A Vampire Who Comes Back (2008) Moonlighting (1982) @ BLU SALE Mortdecai (2015) BLU Premature Burial (1962) @ BLU SALE Retaliation (1968) @ BLU SALE Satan’s Blade (1984) (30th Anniversary)  She Killed in Ecstasy (1970) @ BLU SALE Sleepwalker (2014) Slipper and the Rose: The Story of Cinderella (1976) Stay As You Are (1978) Still Alice (2014) BLU Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Miss Osbourne (1981) @ BLU SALE These Final Hours (2013) Tip Top (2013) Vampyros Lesbos (1970) @ BLU SALE X: The Man With the X-Ray Eyes (1963) @ BLU SALE You’re Human Like the Rest of Them (PAL / Region 2)   NEW DOCUMENTARIES 180 Days: Hartsville (2015) Champs (2015) Dance Goodbye (2014) Magical Universe (2014) Razing the Bar (2014) @ SALE   NEW BLU-RAY Beloved Sisters (2014) Beyond the Lights (2014) Make Way For Tomorrow (1937) (Criterion Collection) @ BLU SALE Supremacy (2014) Wet Hot American Summer (2001) @ BLU SALE You’re Human Like the Rest of Them   NEW TV ON DVD Murder in the First: Season 1 (2014) Power: Season 1 (2014) BLU Science Ficton Theatre: Complete Series (1955) Unforgettable: Season 3   That'll do it for this week's haul. As always, it's Tuesday, which means a big fat shipment of New Releases turned up today.   BLU = Also available to rent on Blu-ray disc 3D BLU = Available for rent on lovely 3D Blu-ray, though you must have a 3D TV to experience the full glory @ = Available for sale in the store (but we can special order anything, see us for details) SALE = Click this link to purchase select titles from our online store.   First up, one of the most important movies of 2014, Ava Duvernay's SELMA (@ BLU SALE), about the landmark event in the Civil Rights movement, starring David Oyelowo as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  Every great thing you've heard about this movie is true, and it couldn't be more timely, so make sure you see it.   Then there's the latest from legendary British filmmaker Mike Leigh. This time he's got MR. TURNER (@ BLU SALE), starring regular collaborator Timothy Spall as 19th Century romanticist painter J.M.W. Turner. Spall plays Turner as a sort of curmudgeon, grunting his way through life, seemingly sad, but in truth keenly observant and capable of producing work of immense beauty. It's a lovely movie about the ways in which we interpret not just art but the artist behind it.   As for the rest, don't forget to check out the following: Gorgeous new collector's editions of Martin Scorsese's GOODFELLAS (@ BLU SALE) and the original MAD MAX (@ BLU SALE). Palme D'or winner WINTER SLEEP (@ BLU SALE), from Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan. Jude Law tries to steal a load of Nazi gold from a sunken sub in BLACK SEA (BLU). Classic Busby Berkeley on blu-ray with 42ND STREET (@ BLU SALE). Ryan Gosling makes his directorial debut with the fantasy LOST RIVER (BLU). Four Spielberg films finally available individually on blu: 1941 (@ BLU SALE), MUNICH (@ BLU SALE), THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS (@ BLU SALE), and DUEL (@ BLU SALE). Speaking of collections, there's a 7-film CLINT EASTWOOD COLLECTION (@ BLU SALE), a 5-movie FRANK SINATRA COLLECTION (@ BLU SALE) -- with ANCHORS AWEIGH (@ BLU SALE), ROBIN & THE 7 HOODS (@ BLU SALE), and ON THE TOWN (@ BLU SALE) also available on their own -- and the SERGIO LEONE ANTHOLOGY (@ BLU SALE). There's Roger Corman's men-on-a-mission movie THE SECRET INVASION (@ SALE), which would go nicely with the new blu-ray of THE MCKENZIE BREAK (@ BLU SALE). Know any Andrew "Dice" Clay fans? THE ADVENTURES OF FORD FAIRLANE (@ BLU SALE) is also out on blu. We've also got a ton of new TV on DVD this week, including new seasons of BROADCHURCH, MASTERS OF SEX, MR. We'll be back next Tuesday, as usual, with another big stack of new titles. Until then, keep browsing, renting, and buying, because Scarecrow can't survive without you!      Matt Lynchleevancleef@gmail.comNew Releases for April 28urn:uuid:93b2aaa0-ceab-4d53-9553-1ccb2fd66d391969-12-31T19:33:35ZApril is already over but there's still time for one more piping hot stack of New Releases! First up is the latest from the great Paul Thomas Anderson, and the first cinematic adaptation of a Thomas Pynchon novel. INHERENT VICE (@ BLU SALE) tells the twisty, hilarious, melancholy story of Doc Sportello, a sometime private detective, who, at the end of the 1960s, gets mixed up in a mysterious, vaguely comprehensible web involvng his missing ex-girlfriend, crooked ops, FBI informants, white supremacists, dentists, and a shady drug cartel (maybe?) called the Golden Fang. Like THE MASTER and THERE WILL BE BLOOD before it, INHERENT VICE is a quintessential PTA film, the kind of thing you watch multiple times not just to grasp all the nuances of plot and subtleties of character, but just to soak in the vibe.   Next, the Heroes at the Criterion Collection have brought us their own vintage crime tale. THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE (@ BLU SALE) stars Robert Mitchum as a small-time gangster at the end of his rope, caught between his old buddies who think he's turned rat and a new breed of dangerously inexperienced young criminals. This is a hard-bitten noir transported to an economically-depressed 70s Boston, a truly one-of-a-kind crime movie.   Speaking of one-of-a-kind movies, they don't come any weirder than Sam Peckinpah's Trucksterpiece CONVOY (@ BLU SALE). Based on C.W. McCall's novelty song, it follows the legendary trucker Rubber Duck (Kris Kristofferson) as he evades his nemesis, the brutal Sheriff "Dirty Lyle" Wallace (Ernest Borgnine) and, along with hundreds of his long-hauling bretheren, proceeds to basically set up an armed ad-hoc nation-state of truckers on the US/Mexico border. You really need to see this one.   As for the rest, don't forget to check out the following: Another classic crime film hits blu-ray, MIAMI BLUES (@ BLU SALE) with Alec Baldwin. Mark Wahlberg presses his luck in THE GAMBLER (BLU). Criterion also brings us Jean-Pierre Melville's first feature, the amazing LE SILENCE DE LA MER (@ BLU SALE). A Brand new DVD of David Lynch's great WILD AT HEART (@ SALE). Two more westerns from Kino, Bronson in THE WHITE BUFFALO (@ BLU SALE) and Lee Van Cleef vs. Warren Oates in BARQUERO (@ BLU SALE). J.Lo gets a scary stalker in THE BOY NEXT DOOR (BLU). Masterpiece theater presents WOLF HALL (@ BLU SALE), the story of Henry VII. Robert Townsend's groundbreaking satire HOLLYWOOD SHUFFLE (@ BLU SALE). Vincent Price introduces four tales of terror in FROM A WHISPER TO A SCREAM (@ BLU SALE). New documentaries include Ken Burns' CANCER: THE EMPEROR OF ALL MALADIES, which sounds like fun, and the Oscar-nominated LAST DAYS IN VIETNAM. And for the kids there's the new live-action PADDINGTON (BLU).   Here's the full rental list:   Accidental Love (2015) Appropriate Behavior (2014) Boy Next Door (2015) BLU Convoy (1978) @ BLU SALE Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973) (Criterion Collection) @ BLU SALE Gambler (2014) BLU Ghost Story: The Turn of the Screw (2009) Harry & Son (1984) Henry V (2013) (Shakespeare’s Globe) Hollywood Shuffle (1987) @ BLU SALE Inherent Vice (2014) @ BLU SALE Love Hunter (2014) Mommy (2014) Mystery of Lord Lucan (1994) REC 4: Apocalypse Silence de la Mer (1949) (Criterion Collection) @ BLU SALE Teachers (1984) Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974) Twelfth Night (2012) (Shakespeare’s Globe) Violent and the Damned / No Time to Kill (1959) Wedding Ringer (2015) Wild at Heart (1990) @ SALE Wolf Hall (2015) @ BLU SALE   NEW MANUFACTURE-ON-DEMAND Escape from East Berlin (1962) Every Little Crook & Nanny (1972) Kid Glove Killer (1942) Scorpio Letters (1967)   NEW DOCUMENTARIES Berlin Calling (2015) Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies (2015) Last Days in Vietnam (2014) (American Experience) Physics of Light (2015)   NEW BLU-RAY From A Whisper To A Scream (1987) @ BLU SALE Miami Blues (1980) @ BLU SALE Story of Adele H. We'll let them tell you about it: "Based on the novel by Rumer Godden, the film eloquently contrasts the growing pains of three young women with the immutability of the Bengal river around which their daily lives unfold. Enriched by Renoir’s subtle understanding and appreciation for India and its people, THE RIVER gracefully explores the fragile connections between transitory emotions and everlasting creation."   Also out this week, one of the coolest indie films of 2014, Iranian-American filmmaker Ana Lily Amirpour's wild New-Wave Vampire Western A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT (BLU), about a lonely young lady vampire who stalks the creepy Iranian ghost-town Bad City. There's pretty much nothing out there like this right now, a dreamy, engrossing black-and-white fantasy. Don't miss it.   As for the rest, don't forget to check out the following: Criterion also has a new Eclipse DVD set, SILENT OZU - THREE CRIME DRAMAS. Liam Neeson continues to deploy his very specific set of skills in TAKEN 3 (BLU). Salma Hayek has to blast her way out of a gangster's apartment in EVERLY (BLU). Shout!
