Scarecrow VideoBlogurn:uuid:67e8af20-dce1-459a-a48d-020f5bd51a751969-12-31T19:33:35ZNew Releases for April 21urn:uuid:0e287e3c-a5bc-42b8-b40f-8348665412dd1969-12-31T19:33:35ZIt's another glorious New Release Tuesday here at Scarecrow, and we're ready with a big stack of brand new stuff.   BLU = Also available to rent on Blu-ray disc 3D BLU = Available for rent on lovely 3D Blu-ray, though you must have a 3D TV to experience the full glory   First up, the Heroes at the Criterion Collection have brought us a beautiful blu-ray upgrade of Jean Renoir's 1951 classic THE RIVER (BLU), about a British family's experiences living in colonial India. We'll let them tell you about it: "Based on the novel by Rumer Godden, the film eloquently contrasts the growing pains of three young women with the immutability of the Bengal river around which their daily lives unfold. Enriched by Renoir’s subtle understanding and appreciation for India and its people, THE RIVER gracefully explores the fragile connections between transitory emotions and everlasting creation."   Also out this week, one of the coolest indie films of 2014, Iranian-American filmmaker Ana Lily Amirpour's wild New-Wave Vampire Western A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT (BLU), about a lonely young lady vampire who stalks the creepy Iranian ghost-town Bad City. There's pretty much nothing out there like this right now, a dreamy, engrossing black-and-white fantasy. Don't miss it.   As for the rest, don't forget to check out the following: Criterion also has a new Eclipse DVD set, SILENT OZU - THREE CRIME DRAMAS. Liam Neeson continues to deploy his very specific set of skills in TAKEN 3 (BLU). Salma Hayek has to blast her way out of a gangster's apartment in EVERLY (BLU). Shout! Factory has two double feature blu-rays of 80's cult faves, GHOULIES and GHOULIES II (BLU) and then BREAKIN' and BREAKIN' 2: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO (BLU). Jennifer Aniston struggles with a disfiguring accident in her past in CAKE (BLU). And there's a brand new Collector's Edition blu-ray of enduring masterpiece ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK (BLU).  Here's the full rental list:   All About My Wife (2012) (Region 3) Baal (1969) (PAL / Region 2) Cake (2014) BLU Cooley High (1974) Dance With Me, Henry (1956) Deep in the Darkness (2014) Dragnet Girl (1933) (Criterion Eclipse) Everly (2014) BLU Face Reader (2013) Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014) BLU Enter the Dangerous Mind (2013) Like Sunday, Like Rain (2014) Little Accidents (2014) Living is Easy with Eyes Closed (2013) River (1951) (Criterion Collection) BLU Satan’s Cheerleaders (1977) Taken 3 BLU Tale of Winter (1992) That Night’s Wife (1930) (Criterion Eclipse) Walk Cheerfully (1930) (Criterion Eclipse) Wicked Lady (1983)   NEW DOCUMENTARIES Frontline: Being Mortal One Million Dubliners (2014)   NEW BLU-RAY Big Switch / Man of Violence (1968) Breakin’ / Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo Escape from Alcatraz (1979) Ghoulies / Ghoulies II   NEW TV ON DVD Fortitude (2014) BLU Glory of Family Vol. 1 & 2 (2008) (Korean Drama) Lights and Shadows Vol. 1 & 2 (2011) (R3, Korean Drama) Musketeers: Season 2 (2014) Princess’ Man: Complete Series (Korean Drama)   That's gonna do it for this week's haul. It seems to have freaked out our website, which isn't listing the new releases today. Anyhow, take a break and check out today's New Release Tuesday haul of brand spankin' new movies! Or just spend some of that refund on a shiny blu-ray.   BLU = Also available to rent on Blu-ray disc 3D BLU = Available for rent on lovely 3D Blu-ray, though you must have a 3D TV to experience the full glory   First up is the latest masterpiece from legendary French New Wave filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard. GOODBYE TO LANGUAGE is not just a modern avant garde classic but it marks this master filmmaker's first use of 3D technology, and it's maybe the most groundbreaking use of 3D yet. Don't worry, Godard hasn't gone Hollywood...the movie is still a complex collage of images and text, shot in and around Godard's own home (and starring his dog!). Named one of the best films of the year by many, many critics and awards groups, you definitely need to check this out.   Then, those Heroes at the Criterion Collection have brought us a couple more magnificent releases. First there's Carol Reed's thriller ODD MAN OUT. James Mason stars as an Irish Nationalist on the run in shadowy Belfast after being wounded in a holdup gone wrong. This is perhaps an even more gorgeously photographed and suspenseful movie than Reed's more well-known masterpiece THE THIRD MAN.   Also from Criterion, Preston Sturges' beloved comedy of the Common Man, SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS. When a prestigious filmmaker decides he's had enough of contrived Hollywood pablum, he resolves to make a film about the troubles of the downtrodden, and sets off disguised as a tramp on a road trip that proves to be even more of an eye-opener than he anticipated.    As for the rest, don't forget to check out the following: One of the scariest movies in recent years is out, THE BABADOOK. If you like scary stuff, there's also THE WOMAN IN BLACK 2: ANGEL OF DEATH, and British anthology film TALES OF TERROR. David Cronenberg's Hollywood satire MAPS TO THE STARS is out. RZA is back with another kung-fu homage in THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS 2. Vintage punks take on miserable schoolteachers in cult classic CLASS OF 1984. There's a fascinating documentary about a massive Rube Goldberg-like contraption called THE WAY THINGS GO. Belmondo globetrots in a double feature of amazing French adventure comedies, THAT MAN FROM RIO and UP TO HIS EARS. One of the great Ozploitation films, THE LONG WEEKEND, about a young couple under attack by the very forces of nature, finally makes it to blu-ray. Tim Burton's latest, BIG EYES. And for animation fans there's BATMAN VS. ROBIN and some Gerry Anderson marionation in JOE 90: THE COMPLETE SERIES. Here's the full rental list:   Babadook (2014) BLU  Batman Vs. We'll be back as usual next Tuesday! Remember, Scarecrow Video can't survive without You!      Matt Lynchleevancleef@gmail.comNew Releases for April 7urn:uuid:1d958131-2148-4caa-aee9-b186146b527e1969-12-31T19:33:35ZIt's the first New Release Tuesday of April. It's a light week this time, but still full of great movies.   BLU = Also available to rent on Blu-ray disc 3D BLU = Available for rent on lovely 3D Blu-ray, though you must have a 3D TV to experience the full glory @ = Available for sale in the store (but we can special order anything, see us for details) SALE = Click this link to purchase select titles from our online store.   FIrst up is one of the best films of the last couple years that you probably haven't seen. James Gray's THE IMMIGRANT (@ BLU SALE) is a crushing period drama tthat ells the story of a Polish woman (Marion Cotillard) who, after barely making it through Ellis Island, winds up a reluctant prostitute for a hustler played by Joaquin Phoenix, who is completely obsessed with her. Meanwhile, she falls in love with his rival, a magician named Orlando (Jeremy Renner). THE IMMIGRANT is a rare combination of modern sensibilities with classical Hollywood storytelling, and it barely got a release in theaters despite being a critical darling. Don't miss it.   Pretty much at the opposite end of the spectrum are two classic Burt Reynolds movies, finally available on blu-ray in all their glory. Reynolds himself directed SHARKY'S MACHINE (@ BLU SALE), one of his very best movies, in which he plays a cop obsessed with a witness who is also the target of a ruthless gangster. It probably sounds ridiculous, but this is basically Burt's version of VERTIGO, a twisty thriller about sexual obsession and voyeurism, only with ninjas and mustaches.   The other Burtastic entry this week is Hal Needham's HOOPER (@ BLU SALE), in which Reynolds plays the title character, the greatest stunt man alive. HOOPER doesn't have much of a plot, though. It's mostly a loving tribute to the craft of making action stars look good, and it's filled with some of the best stunts the legendary Needham ever put on camera, including this one:   As for the rest, don't forget to check out the following: Two versions of the classic melodrama IMITATION OF LIFE (@ BLU SALE) in one package. Gritty 70's throwback A MOST VIOLENT YEAR (@ BLU SALE). Robert Mitchum is a badass bootlegger in THUNDER ROAD (@ BLU SALE). Brutal Japanese/Indonesian serial killer jam KILLERS (@ BLU SALE). Vintage Yakuza madness in MASSACRE GUN (@ BLU SALE) from Arrow. Three great sci-fi films make it to blu this week, melancholy classic SILENT RUNNING (@ BLU SALE), Gerry Anderson's JOURNEY TO THE FAR SIDE OF THE SUN (@ BLU SALE), and Tobe Hooper's insane remake of INVADERS FROM MARS (@ BLU SALE) from 1986. Speaking of remakes, there's the 1983 remake of Jean-Luc Godard's original masterpiece BREATHLESS (@ BLU SALE), this one starring Richard Gere. And if you want a blast of Seattle nostalgia, SINGLES (@ BLU SALE) is now on blu-ray. For the TV fans, we've got the first seasons of MANHATTAN and GRANTCHESTER (@ SALE). Here's the full rental list.   For Hope (1996) If You Don’t, I Will (2012) Immigrant (2013) @ BLU SALE Killers (2014) @ BLU SALE Massacre Gun (1967) @ BLU SALE Most Violent Year (2014) @ BLU SALE Thunder Road (1958) @ BLU SALE Voices (2014) What the Peeper Saw (1972)   NEW DOCUMENTARIES Book of Negroes (2015) GPO Film Unit Collection: We Live in Two Worlds (PAL/R2) Happy Valley Invisible Front (2014) Mad as Hell (2014) Monk With a Camera (2013) Pelican Dreams (2014)   NEW MANUFACTURE-ON-DEMAND All My Sons (1948) Her Jungle Love (1938) High, Wide and Handsome (1937) Men With Wings (1938) Moon’s Our Home (1936) Restless Years (1958) White Woman (1933)   NEW BLU-RAY Hooper (1978) @ BLU SALE Imitation of Life (1934 & 1959) @ BLU SALE Invaders from Mars (1986) @ BLU SALE Sharky’s Machine (1981) @ BLU SALE Silent Running (1972) @ BLU SALE Singles (1992) @ BLU SALE   FAMILY NEW RELEASES Lego Legends of Chima: Season 2 Part 1 Ungle Grandpa: Good Mornin’ (2010)   NEW TV ON DVD Grantchester: Season 1 @ SALE Inside Amy Schumer: Seasons 1 & 2 King of the Hill: Season 9 & 10 Manhattan: Season 1   That'll about do it for this week's haul. We'll be back as usual next Tuesday with another stack of new stuff!       Matt Lynchleevancleef@gmail.comNew Releases for March 31urn:uuid:46b237a4-786d-47f1-976e-be37afd6c1211969-12-31T19:33:35ZIt's the last New Release Tuesday of March! First up, those Heroes at the Criterion Collection have brought us one of Ingmar Bergman's funniest* pictures, the hilarious CRIES AND WHISPERS, about a woman who is visited by her two sisters as she's slowly succumbing to cancer.  *Note: this movie is not funny at all, actually it's very sad.   Then, Criterion has also released what might be the greatest (certainly the most influential) documentaries of the last few decades, the groundbreaking HOOP DREAMS, which follows two African-American boys from Chicago over many years as they grow into young adulthood and use their athletic skills to build new lives for themselves.   Last but not least is the latest Christopher Nolan opus INTERSTELLAR (@ BLU SALE). The McConnaisance continues as Matt McC leaves his family behind and heads out into the stars to try to save humanity from certain doom. Space's deep, man. Alright.   As for the rest, don't forget to check out the following: Benedict Cumberbatch is Alan Turing in THE IMITATION GAME (@ BLU SALE). Jason Statham gets one of his best outings in a while in WILD CARD (BLU). You can get whatever you want at ALICE'S RESTAURANT (@ BLU SALE). Vintage beatnik thriller THE BEAT GENERATION (@ BLU SALE). One of the greatest Spaghetti Westerns ever is finally available from Arrow, DAY OF ANGER (@ BLU SALE). Reese Witherspoon goes on a self-help journey in WILD (BLU). Blake Edwards' hilarious WWII satire WHAT DID YOU DO IN THE WAR DADDY? (@ BLU SALE). A horse takes on a dog, a kid, a preacher, and a gunfighter in STRANGER AT MY DOOR (@ BLU SALE). THE STRANGE AFFAIR OF UNCLE HARRY (@ BLU SALE) is kinda like GREY GARDENS meets SUNSET BOULEVARD, so yeah. And for the TV fans we've got HBO's SILICON VALLEY (@ BLU SALE) and VEEP: SEASON 3 (BLU).  Here's the full rental list:   30 Girls 30 Days (2012) Alice’s Restaurant (1969) @ BLU SALE Alphabet Murders (1965) Beat Generation (1959) @ BLU SALE Behind Enemy Lines (1997) Best House in London (1969) Circle (2014) Cries and Whispers (1972) (Criterion Collection) BLU David and Lisa (1962) Day of Anger (1967) @ BLU SALE Deviants (2014) Do Not Disturb (PAL / Region 2) Facts of Life (1960) Fallen Jewel (2011) Harlock: Space Pirate (2013) Hillbilly Horror Show V.1 (2014) How to Beat the High Cost of Living (1980) Imitation Game (2014) @ BLU SALE Interstellar (2014) @ BLU SALE Night Game (1989) Nylon Loose / Escape from Sahara (1958) Outcast (2014) BLU  Quiet Gun (1957) Rewrite (2014) Salvation Army (2013) Shanghai Story (1954) Strange Affair of Uncle Harry (1945) @ BLU SALE Stranger at My Door (1956) @ BLU SALE Wild (2014) BLU Wild Card (2015) BLU  Without a Clue (1988) Wolfcop (2014)   NEW DOCUMENTARIES Frontline: Putin’s Way Hoop Dreams (1994) (Criterion Collection) BLU Island of Lemurs: Madagascar BLU 3D Language Matters with Bob Holman   NEW MANUFACTURE-ON-DEMAND All at Sea (1957) Bad Men of Tombstone (1949) Black Midnight (1949) Doctor’s Dilemma (1958) Face of Fire (1959) Our Mother’s House (1967) Screaming Eagles (1956) Seven Angry Me (1955) Where the Spies Are (1966)   NEW BLU-RAY Good People (2014) Identical (2014) Kremlin Letter (1969) Reach Me (2014) Revenge of the Green Dragons (2014) Sabbatical (2014) What Did You Do in the War Daddy? GATES OF HEAVEN chronicles the ways in which people mourn and remember their deceased pets. Pet cemeteries, memorials, you name it. It comes as a double feature with VERNON, FLORIDA, all about the unusual characters Morris discovers in a small Florida town.  The third Morris film is his groundbreaking documentary THE THIN BLUE LINE, which delves into the case of a man wrongly convicted of murdering a police officer. This movie actually contributed to his eventual release, and it's also notable for its then-new use of dramatic reenactments to examine the crime.   We also want to insist that you take a look at a real long-lost gem, Duke Mitchell's never-completed mafia caper film GONE WITH THE POPE (@ BLU SALE) Mitchell was a singer and actor and also, occasionally, a filmmaker who had a fierce passion for the way Italian-americans were represented in movies as well as being a huge fan of good old mob films. GONE WITH THE POPE features him rounding up a bunch of his gangster buddies to kidnap the Holy Father and ransom him for a dollar from every Catholic in the world. It's a strange film, made all the weirder because although it was filmed in 1976, it wasn't finished until 2010, when Oscar-winning editor Bob Murawski assembled the footage. Truly an oddity, don't miss it.   As for the rest, don't forget to check out the following: Another Middle-Earth trilogy closes with THE HOBBIT: BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES (@ BLU 3D SALE). Angelina Jolie directs the story of a man imprisoned in a Japanese POW camp during WWII in UNBROKEN. Sondheim gets the Hollywood treatment in INTO THE WOODS (@ BLU SALE). Classic noir in COVER UP (@ BLU SALE) from 1949. Lucio Fulci's horror masterpiece THE BEYOND (@ BLU SALE) finally lands on blu-ray, along with totally bonkers yakuza revenge movie BLIND WOMAN'S CURSE (@ BLU SALE). A great making-of documentary, JOHN FORD: DREAMING THE QUIET MAN (@ BLU SALE). New collection WALERIAN BOROWCZYK: SHORT FILMS AND ANIMATION. Robert Altman's Van Gogh movie VINCENT & THEO (@ BLU SALE). There's also another great John Cusack 80's comedy, THE SURE THING (@ BLU SALE). And last but not least, MST3K COLLECTION VOL. 32, featuring HERCULES, RADAR SECRET SERVICE (Radar!), SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL, and SPACE TRAVELERS.
