GATES OF HEAVEN chronicles the ways in which people mourn and remember their deceased pets. Pet cemeteries, memorials, you name it. It comes as a double feature with VERNON, FLORIDA, all about the unusual characters Morris discovers in a small Florida town.  The third Morris film is his groundbreaking documentary THE THIN BLUE LINE, which delves into the case of a man wrongly convicted of murdering a police officer. This movie actually contributed to his eventual release, and it's also notable for its then-new use of dramatic reenactments to examine the crime.   We also want to insist that you take a look at a real long-lost gem, Duke Mitchell's never-completed mafia caper film GONE WITH THE POPE (@ BLU SALE) Mitchell was a singer and actor and also, occasionally, a filmmaker who had a fierce passion for the way Italian-americans were represented in movies as well as being a huge fan of good old mob films. GONE WITH THE POPE features him rounding up a bunch of his gangster buddies to kidnap the Holy Father and ransom him for a dollar from every Catholic in the world. It's a strange film, made all the weirder because although it was filmed in 1976, it wasn't finished until 2010, when Oscar-winning editor Bob Murawski assembled the footage. Truly an oddity, don't miss it.   As for the rest, don't forget to check out the following: Another Middle-Earth trilogy closes with THE HOBBIT: BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES (@ BLU 3D SALE). Angelina Jolie directs the story of a man imprisoned in a Japanese POW camp during WWII in UNBROKEN. Sondheim gets the Hollywood treatment in INTO THE WOODS (@ BLU SALE). Classic noir in COVER UP (@ BLU SALE) from 1949. Lucio Fulci's horror masterpiece THE BEYOND (@ BLU SALE) finally lands on blu-ray, along with totally bonkers yakuza revenge movie BLIND WOMAN'S CURSE (@ BLU SALE). A great making-of documentary, JOHN FORD: DREAMING THE QUIET MAN (@ BLU SALE). New collection WALERIAN BOROWCZYK: SHORT FILMS AND ANIMATION. Robert Altman's Van Gogh movie VINCENT & THEO (@ BLU SALE). There's also another great John Cusack 80's comedy, THE SURE THING (@ BLU SALE). And last but not least, MST3K COLLECTION VOL. 32, featuring HERCULES, RADAR SECRET SERVICE (Radar!), SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL, and SPACE TRAVELERS. It's a strange film, more about atmosphere than plot, sometimes very hallucinatory, and all anchored by an amusingly gruff performance by Montgomery. Don't miss it.   Then, UK label Arrow Films has finally started putting out titles here in the states, and their debut is the notorious 1970 film MARK OF THE DEVIL (@ BLU SALE), with Udo Keir and Herbert Lom as witch-hunters who finally have to face the consequences of their torturous ways. One of the most famously nasty movies ever made, finally available in a gorgeous blu-ray with tons of extras. Careful with that trailer...maybe NSFW. As for the rest, don't forget to check out the following: Arrow also has a lovely blu of Brian De Palma's VERTIGO homage OBSESSION (@ BLU SALE), and Criterion also brings us Francois Truffaut's touching drama THE SOFT SKIN (@ BLU SALE). Ridley Scott's biblical epic EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS (BLU 3D). Then you'd have something close to MASSACRE MAFIA STYLE (@ BLU SALE), a long-forgotten cult gangster movie from 1978. Produced, written, and directed by actor and singer Duke Mitchell, who's also the star, it's a very low-budget rise-and-fall mafia movie made with genuine passion. Mitchell may not be the most capable filmmaker, but he cares deeply about the way organized crime and his Italian heritage had become inextricable in the movies, and so he made his own film to comment on that directly. MASSACRE MAFIA STYLE is finally given a proper release this week with a gorgeous blu-ray from Grindhouse Releasing.   There's another ultra-rare cult film getting a proper blu-ray this week, 1982's THE FAN (@ BLU SALE), a German thriller about a young woman obsessed with a pop star. Part romance, part horror film, part feminist allegory, this is a really unique movie that will hopefully find a wider audience now.   As for the rest, don't forget to check out the following: The great French master Alain Resnais' final film LIFE OF RILEY (@ BLU SALE). There's gonzo Japanese bondage comedy R100 (@ BLU SALE). Joseph Losey's subversive noir THE PROWLER (@ BLU SALE) has been newly restored. Norwegian submarine thriller PIONEER (@ BLU SALE) surfaces. Many of his films have never been properly distributed in the US and are unavailable on home video.  ALSO LIKE LIFE: THE FILMS OF HOU HSIAO-HSIEN begins on Friday, March 20th with shows at both the Grand Illusion and NWFF.  The night before, on Thursday the 19th at 7pm, we'll be hosting a kickoff showing of Hou's early feature THE BOYS FROM FENGKUEI in our Screening Room, which isn't screening as part of the proper retrospective. The film will be introduced by local critic, friend of the store, and Asian cinema scholar Sean Gilman, and best of all, it's FREE! Here's the full schedule of movies running at the GI and NWFF. This Hou retrospective is basically the repertory film event of the year here in Seattle. We're tremendously lucky to get these films here in town. But many of Hou's films aren't a part of the retrospective, so here at Scarecrow we've decided to fill in a few of the blanks.  In addition to the kickoff screening of THE BOYS FROM FENGKUEI on the 19th, once the full series at Grand Illusion and NWFF is complete, we'll be screening a few of the remaining titles here in our own Screening Room! Mon 3/30: CITY OF SADNESS (6:30PM) Tues 3/31: THE PUPPETMASTER (6:30PM) Mon 4/6: GOODBYE SOUTH GOODBYE (7PM) Tues 4/7: CAFE LUMIERE (7PM) ALL of the Screenings here at Scarecrow are of course absolutely FREE! In this true story, Steve Carell is amazing as John Du Pont, a dangerously eccentric billionaire who becomes obsessed with two brothers (Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo, also fantastic), both Olympic medal-winners for Wrestling. This is a bleak and deliberate thriller about our attraction to power and the lengths to which people will go to obtain and keep it.    At the opposite end of the spectrum is SPACE DANDY (@ BLU SALE), the latest series from legendary anime creator Shinichiro Watanabe, the mad genius responsible for COWBOY BEBOP and SAMURAI CHAMPLOO. This is a completely bonkers show, constantly experimenting with genre and style, with, of course, a terrific soundtrack. You'll get hooked immediately.    As for the rest, don't forget to check out the following: There's the MUSICALS COLLECTION (@ BLU SALE) 4-pack of classic musicals on blu-ray featuring SINGIN' IN THE RAIN as well as three brand new-to-blu titles, KISS ME KATE (@ BLU 3D SALE), THE BAND WAGON (@ BLU SALE), and CALAMITY JANE (@ BLU SALE). Atom Egoyan's latest film THE CAPTIVE (BLU). The latest so-bad-it's-good classic, INTO THE STORM (BLU) arrives.
