New Releases for June 2

It's the first New Release Tuesday of June! Which also means it's already June. We'd wonder about where all the time goes, but the truth is we spent it all watching movies.

BLU = Also available to rent on Blu-ray disc

3D BLU = Available for rent on lovely 3D Blu-ray, though you must have a 3D TV to experience the full glory

@ = Available for sale in the store (but we can special order anything, see us for details)

The big one this week is of course the long-awaited blu-ray release of the Greatest Show in Television History (tm), HBO's THE WIRE (@ BLU SALE). All five seasons of McNutty and Stringer and Marlo and Omar, all five seasons of institutional failure and Bawlmer accents. Start your binge watching now, so that by the time the weekend rolls around you can amuse your neighbors by hollering "Omar comin'!" and "Where's Wallace at?!" out the window!

Also, we know it flopped in theaters and the mainstream seemed to hate it, but the Wachowski's JUPITER ASCENDING (@ BLU 3D SALE) is really some pitch-perfect weirdness, an unabashedly dorky outer-space fairy tale seemingly inspired by vintage sci-fi paperback covers. Give it a shot, we implore you.

As for the rest, don't forget to check out the following: Will Smith is a con artist in FOCUS (BLU). The latest from Bruno Dumont, LI'L QUINQUIN (@ BLU SALE), is a four-hour murder mystery starring what appears to be feral children. History meets fantasy in Tsui Hark's THE TAKING OF TIGER MOUNTAIN (BLU). Vintage Italian crime with KILLER COP (@ BLU SALE). Five classics in the JOHN WAYNE WESTERNS COLLECTION (@ BLU SALE). A double dose of Mickey Rourke on blu-ray with THE POPE OF GREENWICH VILLAGE (@ BLU SALE) and DESPERATE HOURS (@ BLU SALE). A brand new blu-ray of 1776 (@ BLU SALE), the musical about the signing of the Declaration of Independence. A bunch of bank robbers battle demons in SCARECROWS (@ BLU SALE). Kevin Costner plays a cross-country track coach in MCFARLAND USA (BLU). For the kids there's THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SPONGE OUT OF WATER (BLU 3D). And on the TV front we've got the second season of future classic RECTIFY and the final seasons of JUSTIFIED (BLU) and PARKS AND RECREATION.
