Our favorite release this week is definitely the amazing JOHN WICK (@ BLU SALE), one of the best action movies to come down the pike in a long time. Keanu Reeves plays the titular character, mourning the recent death of his beloved wife. Turns out that before she passed away, she arranged for a new puppy to be delivered to him to aid in his grief. But when a couple of thugs break in, steal John's car, and kill the adorable pup, they get more than they bargained for. Because they didn't realize that John is the underworld's most fearsome killer! It's as ridiculous as it sounds, but it's also loaded with incredible action scenes, a killer cast (Willem Dafoe and Ian McShane, just to name a couple) and gorgeous cinematography. Give this one a chance and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

We also got in three more classics from the legendary Studio Ghibli. There's POM POKO (@ BLU SALE), Isao Takahata's story of magical Tanuki (basically raccoons) who band together to stop an evil land developer from razing the forest they call home. Then there's Hayao Miyazaki's PORCO ROSSO (@ BLU SALE), about a WWI fighter pilot cursed by a witch to live out the rest of his life as a pig! And finally there's TALES FROM EARTHSEA (@ BLU SALE), by Miyazaki's son Goro, based on the works of author Ursula K. Le Guin. They're all finally available in lovely blu-ray editions.

As for the rest, don't forget to check out the following:  The Heroes at the Criterion Collection bring us EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF (@ BLU SALE), a little-seen 1980 work from Jean-Luc Godard. For horror fans there's OUIJA (BLU), anthology film THE ABCS OF DEATH 2 (BLU), and a new spin on an old legend in DRACULA UNTOLD (BLU). DEAR WHITE PEOPLE is a scathing satire of contemporary race relations. Simon Pegg finds himself in HECTOR AND THE SEARCH FOR HAPPINESS. Indie drama THE DISAPPEARANCE OF ELEANOR RIGBY (BLU) appears in three different versions. One film each, titled HER and HIM, follows half of a couple on the verge of separation, while the third version, THEM, edits those two movies together. And for the masochists there's Kevin Sorbo in KULL THE CONQUEROR (@ BLU SALE)

New to blu-ray this week is ABOUT SCHMIDT (@ BLU SALE), which scored Jack Nicholson an Oscar nom, LUST FOR LIFE (@ BLU SALE), starring Kirk Douglas as Vincent Van Gogh, and DINER (@ BLU SALE), Barry Levinson's beloved 1950s-set coming of age story.

For documentary lovers, we've got THE OVERNIGHTERS, the surprisingly twisty story of a preacher serving an oil-boom town in North Dakota, and VIDEO GAMES: THE MOVIE, about, well, video games.
