New Releases for October 21

The New Scarecrow Video is a week old! That also means it's New Release Tuesday! Let's have a look at all the stuff we got in this week.

BLU = Also available to rent on Blu-ray disc

@ = Available for sale in the store (but we can special order anything, see us for details)

Those Heroes at the Criterion Collection have finally released LA DOLCE VITA (@ BLU). In Federico Fellini’s 1960 masterpiece, the deviant and excessive lifestyles of Rome’s socialites serve as the backdrop for Marcello, a celebrity journalist on a seemingly futile quest for ‘the sweet life’. Played with a mix of cavalier charisma and believable existential malaise by Marcello Mastroianni, he struggles to come to terms with his own personal values amongst the decadence and decay of modern society. Fellini’s commentary on 1960s Europe and a selfish, celebrity-obsessed culture is (unfortunately) just as relevant now as it was over fifty years ago, and just as gorgeous to look at. The new Criterion release features a 4k digital restoration by The Film Foundation, a visual essay, and several previously unreleased interviews.

Also on tap this week is the sci-fi adventure SNOWPIERCER (@ BLU), the new film from THE HOST director Bong Joon-Ho. Based on a French graphic novel, it tells the story of a future Earth ravaged by a new ice age. The only survivors exist on a massive train that circles the globe year after year. Inside, society is broken down into castes, with the poorest citizens relegated to the rear of the train where they live in abject poverty and horrible conditions, and the wealthiest stay up front, closer to the warmth of the engine. It's only a matter of time before open revolt breaks out.

As for the rest, don't forget to check out the following: Criterion has also brought an blu-ray upgrade of Orson Welles' F FOR FAKE (@ BLU). For rent, we've brought in new Twilight Time blu-rays of Robert Wise's reincarnation drama AUDREY ROSE, killer cult thriller THE BELIEVERS, and the 1988 version of THE BLOB. Legendary German video nasty NEKROMANTIK is here in a gorgeous new transfer. There's new anime LETTER TO MOMO (@ BLU). We got THE VINCENT PRICE COLLECTION VOL. 2 (@ BLU), with seven new fantastic Blu-rays like the original HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL and DR. PHIBES RISES AGAIN. Say the secret word and Scream Real Loud, there's PEE-WEE'S PLAYHOUSE: THE COMPLETE SERIES (@ BLU). And last but not least, the first half of MAD MEN: THE FINAL SEASON (@ BLU).
