August in Our Screening Lounge!

Alright, it's time for another month of putting eyeballs on great movies!  We've got a ton of great stuff lined up for our Screening Room in August. More Kaiju films, some more fantastic classic Chinese musicals, animation, some damn dirty apes, a ton of Film Noir, and a few awesome special events as well! Remember, all of our screenings are ABSOLUTELY FREE! Just remember to pick up some beer or snacks or other refreshments from VHSPresso! Right click on the image for a version you can save.

Music Mondays: Classic Chinese Musicals

We had such a blast with July's lineup of Shaw Bros Huangmei opera movies, we decided to screen another handful of them this month. Every Monday at 7pm you'll get a fresh vintage musical. All of the titles in this group involve romance across social barriers (and in one case a very physical one) First up on Monday the 4th is THE KINGDOM AND THE BEAUTY, from 1959. It stars Linda Lin Dai in a sort-of-Cinderella story about a country maid pursued by the Emperor, who has fallen madly in love with her.

On the 11th is the absolutely fantastic BEYOND THE GREAT WALL, also with Linda Lin Dai. This time she plays a royal concubine who nobly sacrifices herself by marrying a barbarian warlord in order to prevent all-out war. This is an intensely patriotic film and its gender politics are both powerful and completely different from our own. An absolute must see, one of the best of the genre.

The 18th brings THE MERMAID. Ivy Ling Po plays a young man (remember, Huangmei films often gender-swapped performers) who tries to escape an arranged marriage after falling in love with a carp spirit who appears to him after he sings to a lonely fish in a pond.

Finally on the 25th there's THE THREE SMILES, about a wandering scholar who falls in love with a noblewoman, going so far as to sell himself into servitude in order to be near to her.

There's pretty much nothing else out there like these films, and they're difficult to see without a region-free player, so make sure you check them out while you have the chance!

Rene Laloux on Wednesdays

We've got a couple of excellent, vintage French animated films from filmmaker Rene Laloux on Wednesdays at 7pm. Laloux made influential, imaginitive films with a style heavily inspired by the artist Moebius, and we're showing two of his best. First on the 13th is FANTASTIC PLANET, about a world run by giant blue beings who cruelly enslave humans. Eventually rebellion brews!

Then on the 20th it's TIME MASTERS, about a little boy who finds himself caught up in an intergalactic adventure when his parents are killed in an attack by space hornets. Yep, space hornets.

Gamera Thursdays!

We've been showing a ton of Godzilla features and vintage Japanese Sci-fi lately, but the amazing Gamera films have been sorely ignored in the Screening Room. We're gonna change all that this month! We've got three of the original seven films ready to go. The Gamera series isn't as fondly remembered as Godzilla, but the movies are way weirder and more colorful and especially more violent. They're also some of the best Kaiju films ever made.

First up on the 7th is GAMERA VS. BAIRUS, aka DESTROY ALL PLANETS. This one opens with a couple of little boys having a submarine race with Gamera and it never lets up. Soon they've been kidnapped by aliens and it's up to everyone's favorite giant kappa to save the day.

Then on the 14th it's GAMERA VS. GUIRON, aka ATTACK OF THE MONSTERS. In this one a couple of kids are waylaid by two alien girls who want to feast on their delicious brains. Guiron is basically a giant hot dog with a knife for a head. You gotta see this.

And lastly on the 21st is GAMERA VS. ZIGRA, the final original Gamera movie. Here he battles a giant alien fish monster...he even plays his own theme song on Zigra's ribs like a xylophone!

All of the Gamera movies begin at 7pm.

Fridays of the Planet of the Apes!

Since everyone loves the new movie DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, we thought we'd run a couple of the later installments of the original series. We're beginning on the 22nd at 8pm with ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES, which finds Cornelius and Zira as they're hurtled back in time to our present! What follows is equal parts dark satire and goofy comedy. Look out for the shopping montage!

And then on the 29th, also at 8pm, we've got CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, which follows ESCAPE and takes place on a future earth that has enslaved intelligent apes. It isn't long before open rebellion is at hand.

Saturday Night Fright Hole!!

Rich's Saturday night horror picks are always a hit, and this month is going to be no different. Fright Hole always starts at 8pm. First on the 9th it's vintage TV movie THE BERMUDA DEPTHS, which involves Carl Weathers, a pact with Satan and another giant turtle!

On the 23rd at 8pm we have SENNENTUNTSCHI, a scary Swiss transmission about some creepy goings-on in an alpine village. This has a really effective and mysterious nesting-doll flashback structure. One of the most interesting horror films we've come across in a while.

And finally on the 30th it's cult favorite TALES FROM THE CRYPT: DEMON KNIGHT. You can never get enough Billy Zane!

Film Noir Sunday Matinees!

We'll be screening a classic film noir every Sunday Afternoon in August at 1pm. On the 3rd it's the great OUT OF THE PAST, starring Robert Mitchum as an ex-detective trying to escape his dangerous history.

On the 10th, Humphrey Bogart stars in DARK PASSAGE as a criminal who undergoes plastic surgery to give him a new identity

The 17th brings THE BIG CLOCK, about a journalist framed for murder by his jealous boss.

Robert Ryan is a boxer who might not make it through one last fight in THE SET-UP on the 24th.

And lastly on the 31st, the great Anthony Mann's RAW DEAL about a convict who busts out of prison and tries to make a clean getaway. It ain't that easy, of course.

Tons of Great Special Screenings and Events!!

As usual, we've got a bunch of special screenings and events set up all month long.

The First two Fridays are set aside for VHSPresso's Thom to present one of his favorite things, Formula One racing! Thom's Racing Nights start at 7pm on 8/1 and 8/8, and he'll be showing segments of classic races and documentarties like 1 and Senna.

It's A Night of Pro Wrestling Memories. Bring your favorite classic matches and watch them up on the big screen with other fans!
