July in Our Screening Lounge!

Alright, it's time for another month of putting eyeballs on great movies!  We've got a ton of great stuff lined up for our Screening Room in July, including a metric ton of vintage Japanese sci-fi and Kaiju films, some fantastic classic Chinese musicals, and a few awesome special events as well! Remember, all of our screenings are ABSOLUTELY FREE! Just remember to pick up some beer or snacks or other refreshments from VHSPresso! Right click on the image for a version you can save.

Music Mondays: Classic Chinese Musicals

Mondays are usually reserved for Music-related material, but we decided to do something a little different this month. Obviously we love the Shaw Brothers and their dozens and dozens of martial arts films, Kung Fu wasn't their only jam. They also produced tons of musicals, many of them in a style of Chinese opera called Huangmei. Traditionally in these films male leading roles were also portrayed by women, and they are massively heightened melodramas that operate on an entirely different level from what Western audiences are used to. So every Monday at 7pm in July you'll get another of one of these little-seen gems.

On the 7th is THE LOVE ETERNE, directed by the great Han Hsiang Li. This is probably the most famous of the Huangmei films, about a young girl who disguises herself as a boy in order to go off to school to further her education. There she falls in love with a handsome student, but she can't reveal the truth about her gender. Of course, it wouldn't be much of a film if this romance weren't somehow star-crossed.

On the 14th, it's DREAM OF THE RED CHAMBER, starring a young Bridget Lin, who would go on to be one of Hong Kong's greatest superstars (and one of HK cinema's most beautiful actresses). She plays a young boy who is tricked by his duplicitous family into forsaking his true love and marrying another. It doesn't work out so well, so bring some kleenex.

On the 21st, we've got the perfect movie for anyone who loved the old Disney film MULAN. Yep, the Shaw Brothers made a musical version of the story way back in the 60s. It's called THE LADY GENERAL HUA MULAN, and it's terrific.

And finally on Monday the 28th, we have one of legendary martial arts filmmaker King Hu's first features, THE STORY OF SUE SAN, which involves a rich man who falls in love with a prostitute, only to have his life fall apart as a consequence.

Wednesday Night Kaiju Classics

We've got a lineup of classic Godzilla films running every Wednesday in July. If you're only familiar with the original classic or this summer's remake, you're in for a treat, as we've chosen a handful of the most underseen and stylish entries in the franchise. All of these shows begin at 7pm.

On the 9th it's GODZILLA VS. MONSTER ZERO, which features the great Three-Headed Monster, King Ghidorah, as a pawn of alien invaders from Planet X.

The 16th holds a really underappreciated one, GODZILLA VS. THE SEA MONSTER, which finds the big G taking on Ebirah, a giant crab, as well as a ruthless terrorist group building nuclear bombs on Mothra's home island!

On the 23rd we've got maybe the best Godzilla movie since the original 1954 film. GODZILLA VS. THE SMOG MONSTER is an incredibly stylish, psychedelic monster mash with a strong environmental message. Godzilla takes on a beast made of pure pollution, and the movie comes complete with trippy animated interludes and other bizarre stuff like a James Bond-inspired opening credits sequence. Also one of the few Godzilla movies to actually show the dead bodies left in the wake of the monster fights.

And finally on the 30th it's GODZILLA VS. MEGALON. For all of you MST3K fans, this is the one featuring Jet Jaguar! Definitely one of the weirdest entries, it also features some of the most exciting (and really dangerous-looking) fight scenes.

Thursdays: Even More Vintage Japanese Sci-Fi

We've got a trilogy of fantastic Japanese sci-fi films on Thursdays at 7pm this month. First up on the 3rd is the legendary THE MYSTERIANS, which features an invasion of Earth by aliens determined to steal Japan's women! Look out for the giant robot!

Then on the 10th it's BATTLE FROM OUTER SPACE, a loose sequel of sorts to THE MYSTERIANS. It's not just a clever title, either.

And then it's the final entry in the series, THE WAR IN SPACE. Definitely a step up from a plain ol' battle.

More Saturday Night Fright Hole!!

Saturdays are always great for horror movies, and Rich's Saturday Night FrightHole never disappoints. We're starting off on the 5th of July with something a little patriotic, UNCLE SAM! He Wants You...Dead!!

The rest of the month is devoted to the stupid teenagers that decide to go camping every summer...and inevitably end up hacked to death by a crazed maniac. On the 12th it's WILDERNESS, a British film about a bunch of juvenile delinquents who get sent to a "survival" camp (take note of the scare quotes).

On the 19th we're screening SUMMER CAMP NIGHTMARE, sort of like the slasher version of that "Simpsons" episode with Kamp Krusty. A bunch of desperate campers revolt against their cruel counselors!

And finally on the 26th it's the classic SLEEPAWAY CAMP!

All Saturday Night shows begin at 8pm.

As usual, we've got a handful of one-off events and special screenings too.

On Sunday the 6th, the Cinema Dames of the Grand Illusion are back for their monthly meetup. This time they've selected FRANCES HA, one of the very best movies of 2013. It screens at 5pm.

Thursday the 17th at 7pm, Local Filmmaker and Artist Captain Chambers brings his Holding Fast Film Tour to Scarecrow Video. He'll be screening a few of his short films before donating them to our vast collection. Click HERE for a link to his Facebook Event page.

The following night on Friday the 18th at 8pmwe've got another Board Game Night, hosted by VHSPresso's Thom! Come make new friends and immediately lose them to Monopoly!

And Last but certainly not Least, the Sci-Fi Commons group is hosting their monthly meetup on Friday the 25th at 8pm with James Cameron's original classic THE TERMINATOR!

And Don't forget: Every Tuesday is GEEKS WHO DRINK TRIVIA at 7pm. Make sure you get here early to grab a good spot.

Check out the full calendar for all the other great movies we're screening this month, Hope to see you at some or ALL of these shows!
