First up is one of the best movies of 2013, Spike Jonze's HER (@ BLU SALE). If you haven't heard by now, it stars Joaquin Phoenix as a melancholy divorcee in the near future who gradually falls in love with Samantha (Scarlett Johansson). The only catch is that Samantha isn't a person but a computer operating system. It sounds silly, we know, but HER is one of the sweetest and most genuine love stories you're likely to come across any time soon. Jonze won the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for this one, and if you ask us ScarJo should've been nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her amazing voice work.

Next there's STRANGER BY THE LAKE (@ BLU SALE), a French thriller in the Hitchcock vein, set in the 1980s, that takes place entirely at a gay nude beach where young Franck likes to have a swim and do some occasional cruising. He meets and falls for the alluring Michel, but things take a dark turn when Franck thinks he sees Michel drown another one of his lovers in the lake one night. What follows is less of a mystery than an examination of obsession and jealousy set in a community that, especially at the time, had good reason to be insular and secretive.

Finally, we'd be crazy if we didn't entice you to check out one of the weirdest and silliest movies of 2014 so far, I, FRANKENSTEIN (@ BLU 3D SALE). It's essentially a direct sequel to Mary Shelley's original 1818 novel, and it follows Aaron Eckhart as Dr. Frankenstein's monster (here christened Adam) after the death of his creator. While the immortal Adam only wishes to lead the life of a normal man, he finds himself caught up in a war between evil Demons and angelic Gargoyles, both of whom need to unlock the secrets of Adam's creation to preserve their bloodlines. It's absolutely ridiculous and insanely entertaining. If you've got a spare 90 minutes, it's entirely worth your while.

As for the rest, don't forget to check out the following:  Michel Gondry has an animated (literally) conversation with Noam Chomsky in IS THE MAN WHO IS TALL HAPPY? (@ SALE) There's goofy rom-com THAT AWKWARD MOMENT. Donnie Yen is back to kick some more ass in SPECIAL ID (@ BLU SALE). One of the most brutal battles of WWII gets the 3D spectacle treatment in STALINGRAD (@ BLU 3D SALE).

On the blu-ray front, Scream Factory has unleashed a couple more 80's classics: EVILSPEAK (@ BLU SALE) has both violent video games and Satanists, and school's out forever in FINAL EXAM (@ BLU SALE). We also picked up another old-school Kaiju with GODZILLA VS. THE SEA MONSTER (@ BLU SALE). Finally, the heroes at the Criterion Collection have upgraded the groundbreaking D-Day film OVERLORD (@ BLU SALE) to blu.

There's also some great TV on DVD this week, with new seasons of EASTBOUND & DOWN, LONGMIRE, and at last the first season of the smash hit ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK (@ SALE).
