AMERICAN HUSTLE (@ BLU SALE) got the most nominations at this year's Academy Awards but went home empty handed (although it fared much better at the Golden Globes), but it nevertheless is an exciting caper comedy based (a little bit) on a true event. As the opening title card says, "Some of this stuff actually happened." THREE KINGS and THE FIGHTER director David O. Russell pulls an incredible cast together (Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner...and a lot more) and comes up with a dense but lightning-fast 70's con movie, maybe not the best film to crop up during awards season but certainly one of the most fun.

Who says you can't make a hit movie with a female protagonist? Certainly Katniss Everdeen would disagree, and Anna and Elsa, the twin-sister heroines of Disney's FROZEN (@ BLU SALE) would absolutely have something to say about it. That this movie made a ton of money and raked in a bunch of awards proves audiences are hungry for female-driven films with a message of equality and tolerance.

The Heroes at the Criterion Collection have unearthed a rather difficult-to-see gem this week, documentarian Errol Morris' film of Stephen Hawking's autobiographical A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME (@ BLU SALE). Hawking is one of the greatest geniuses of theoretical physics and, as many know, years ago lost the use of almost his entire body. He communicates with a computer controlled voice synthesizer. Morris' film takes you through Hawking's life and career while making parallels between his universe-expanding discoveries and the slow degeneration of his body. It's a fascinating and ultimately moving documentary.

As for the rest, don't forget to check out the following: Some Mexican demonic-possession horror in HERE COMES THE DEVIL (@ BLU SALE). Idris Elba plays the great South African leader in MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM (@ BLU SALE). Tom Hanks is Walt Disney in SAVING MR. BANKS (@ BLU SALE), about the making of MARY POPPINS. Harry Potter aka Daniel Radcliffe is young Allen Ginsberg in KILL YOUR DARLINGS (@ BLU SALE)...lots of biopics this week! Criterion has also re-released Kurosawa's THE HIDDEN FORTRESS (@ BLU SALE). There's great new documentary (featuring Scarecrow Video), ADJUST YOUR TRACKING: THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE VHS COLLECTOR. We also got in the classic 90's Horror anthology series MONSTERS (SALE).

On the Blu-ray front, we've got a pair of horror films from Redemption, FRIGHTMARE (@ BLU SALE) and THE FLESH AND BLOOD SHOW (@ BLU SALE). Scream Factory has released the 80's slasher classic SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE (@ BLU SALE). There's a reissue of Gregg Araki's MYSTERIOUS SKIN (@ BLU SALE). And a brand new blu of THE BLACK STALLION (@ BLU SALE).
