The most exciting new arrival this week is undoubtedly the Coen Brothers' latest instant classic, INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS (@ BLU SALE). It follows the titular "hero", a down-and-out folk singer in 60s New York City, as he bounces from one couch to another and one misery after another. Also he's searching for a lost cat, which might be a metaphor or something. Alternately hilarious and heartbreaking, and featuring some fantastic musical performances, this is another unsurprisingly great film from the Coens, who somehow never seem to be at less than the height of their powers.

And in case you missed it, last Friday saw the release of THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE (@ BLU SALE). The second installment of the popular franchise finds heroine Katniss forced once again by a horrible government dictatorship to fight for the lives of those she loves most in gladiatorial combat against another (mostly) unwilling crop of warriors. The action and the somewhat subversive underlying politics are really ramped up in this entry, setting up a cliffhanger that'll carry you into MOCKINGJAY later this year.

Then there's OUT OF THE FURNACE (BLU) a meditative crime drama from Scott Cooper, who last directed Jeff Bridges in the country music film CRAZY HEART. Christian Bale stars as a factory worker in rural Pennsylvania who finds himself dealing with all manner of scary meth-head murderers (including an especially nasty one played by Woody Harrelson) when his younger brother (Casey Affleck), an Iraq War vet with severe PTSD, gets mixed up with an underground fighting racket.

As for the rest, don't forget to check out: The latest Yakuza thriller from Takeshi Kitano, BEYOND OUTRAGE (@ BLU SALE). The heroes at The Criterion Collection have released a blu-ray upgrade of David Gordon Green's GEORGE WASHINGTON (@ BLU SALE). There's THE BOOK THIEF (@ BLU SALE), about a young Jewish girl living with a foster family during World War II. Documentary MADEMOISELLE C (@ BLU SALE) follows a former Vogue editor as she tries to start her own magazine. 1948's HOLLOW TRIUMPH (@ SALE) finds a crook assuming a false identity as a psychiatrist while on the run from a gambler he conned. We got in a stack of Australian exploitation films including a massive collection of trailers, the OZPLOITATION TRAILER EXPLOSION (@ SALE), the 1979 vampire movie THIRST (@ BLU SALE), and a nasty little thriller called DEAD KIDS (@ BLU SALE).

On the Blu-ray front, there's late Howard Hawks western EL DORADO (@ BLU SALE), with John Wayne and Robert Mitchum. A great version of GUNFIGHT AT THE O.K. CORRAL (@ BLU SALE) starring Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster as Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp respectively. John Wayne goes on safari in HATARI! (@ BLU SALE) There's 1949's SAMSON AND DELILAH (@ BLU SALE). And we got a double feature blu of AIRPLANE! (the funniest movie ever made) and AIRPLANE II: THE SEQUEL (@ BLU SALE).

And don't forget HOMEFRONT (BLU). It's a good old fashioned "they messed with the wrong man" action movie starring Jason Statham as an ex-undercover federal agent in witness protection who runs afoul of some meth-cooking rednecks headed up by James Franco. Written by Sylvester Stallone, it'll definitely satisfy your weekend needs to tough talking and ass kicking.
