New Releases for February 25

It's a big week for New Releases here at Scarecrow Video, including a couple of sure-to-be-popular Oscar nominees and a ton of new titles from the heroes at The Criterion Collection. Unfortunately, our website is going cuckoo-bananas, and none of the sales links will work. But at the very least, you'll get an idea of all the great stuff we got in, so let's have a look.

BLU = Also available to rent on Blu-ray disc

3D BLU = Available for rent on lovely 3D Blu-ray, though you must have a 3D TV to experience the full glory

@ = Available for sale in the store (but we can special order anything, see us for details)

First up is Criterion's release of Abdellatif Kechiche's controversial and sexually explicit BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR (@ BLU SALE). The winner of the Palme D'or at last year's incredibly prestigious Cannes Film Festival and based on a French graphic novel, it's the story of Adele, a Parisian high schooler who embarks on an extremely intense affair with a bold university art student (Lea Seydoux). The three-hour running time flies by, especially because of the incredible performances by the two lead actresses. Whether or not you feel the much-talked-about sex scenes belong here, the love story is a timely and beautiful one.

Then there's Best Picture nominee NEBRASKA (@ BLU SALE), from THE DESCENDANTS and ELECTION director Alexander Payne. Will Forte plays a man who decides to escort his aging, senile father (Bruce Dern) from his home in Montana to the offices of a sweepstakes in Nebraska, where Dad believes he'll claim a million-dollar prize (which doesn't exist). Along the way the men stop to visit family and make one last try to connect with each other. The gorgeous black & white photography really accentuates the rural American landscapes on display here.

Finally, another Best Picture nominee, the box-office hit GRAVITY (@ BLU 3D SALE). Sandra Bullock and George Clooney play astronauts struggling to survive after a catastrophic accident leaves them stranded and free-floating in outer space. Created almost entirely digitally, this is an incredibly exciting, tight thriller that, for once, uses cutting edge special effects to enhance and create a story rather than just make a bunch of phony CGI nonsense. If you have a 3D television, the blu-ray looks particularly fantastic.

We've also got a host of other Criterion Collection Releases, all of which are Dual-Format DVD/Blu-ray titles. First there's Jean-Luc Godard's groundbreaking masterpiece of the French New Wave, BREATHLESS (@ BLU SALE), which gets a Blu-ray upgrade. Steven Soderbergh's third feature KING OF THE HILL (@ BLU SALE), about a young boy trying to scrape by during the Great Depression, finally sees a U.S. release on disc. Included as a bonus feature is Soderbergh's follow-up THE UNDERNEATH, a low-budget heist thriller starring Peter Gallagher. And finally there's Roman Polanski's TESS (@ BLU SALE), a lush, ravishingly photographed adaptation of Thomas Hardy's "Tess of D'Urburvilles".

And don't forget to check out the rest of our haul this week: Heavily favored Best Supporting Actor nominee Jared Leto in MR. NOBODY (@ BLU SALE). Classic concert film THE SECRET POLICEMAN'S BALL - USA (@ BLU SALE). On the documentary front there's COME BACK, AFRICA (@ BLU SALE), a set of vintage docs made during in South Africa during Apartheid, MUSCLE SHOALS (@ BLU SALE) about the famous FAME recording studios in Alabama, and NARCO CULTURA (@ BLU SALE), chronicling the fascinating, controversial world of Narcocorridos, a popular Latin-American music style celebrating Mexican drug traffickers.

New to Blu-ray this week are the original 1962 300 SPARTANS (@ BLU SALE), a double feature of 80's horror from Scream Factory with BAD DREAMS / VISITING HOURS (@ BLU SALE), the concert documentary FESTIVAL EXPRESS (@ BLU SALE), and underappreciated comic-strip adaptation, 1994's THE SHADOW (@ BLU SALE), with Alec Baldwin as the huge-nosed foe of criminals everywhere.

There's also some new Anime out there, APPLESEED XIII: TARTAROS & OURANDOS (@ BLU SALE) and K: THE COMPLETE SERIES (@ BLU SALE), and for the kids (or more accurately for grown-up kids) there's ADVENTURE TIME: SEASON 3 (@ BLU SALE).

And we'd be remiss if we didn't mention the latest release from Marvel, THOR: THE DARK WORLD (@ BLU 3D SALE), which finds everyone's favorite Asgardian (Chris Hemsworth) teaming up with his villainous brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) to protect his womanfriend Jane (Natalie Portman) and his homeland from an ancient curse brought about by an old enemy.
