New Releases for February 11

Yeah, we know it's technically February 12 today, but our New Releases got stuck in Portland over the weekend because of snow, and they showed up late! So you get New Release Wednesday this week! Since we're already a day behind, let's get started.

3D BLU = Available for rent on lovely 3D Blu-ray, though you must have a 3D TV to experience the full glory

Of course the one you've all been waiting for is SHERLOCK: SEASON 3 (@ BLU SALE). We certainly sympathize, especially having to hold out for two years to find out just how Sherlock apparently survived his fall from the roof of St. Bartholomew's Hospital. You get all three feature-length episodes and a bunch of extras on this set...hopefully that will tide us over for another two years until Season 4!

Maybe while you're waiting for that, you can check out another great TV series, THE AMERICANS (@ BLU SALE). Phillip and Elizabeth Jennings seems like an ordinary couple in '80s Washington, D.C. suburbia. But really they're deep undercover KGB agents, working stealthily to undermine democracy as we know it. Hopefully their friendly neighbor doesn't find out, especially since he works for the FBI. This is a really tense, well-acted drama that examines a piece of Cold War history from a really unique perspective.

Also figuratively hitting our shores is the survival drama ALL IS LOST (@ BLU SALE), starring Robert Redford as a man trying desperately to survive when his boat is severely damaged and he's stranded, alone, at sea. Redford barely has three full sentences of dialogue in this reflective but very suspenseful adventure film, and he is the only person that appears in it. It was definitely overlooked during awards season this year, so don't make the same mistake.

As for the rest, be sure to check out the following: Keri Russell (who also stars in THE AMERICANS) is a rabid Jane Austen fan in AUSTENLAND (@ BLU SALE). Saoirse Ronan is a teenager in the post-apocalypse in HOW I LIVE NOW (@ BLU SALE). Feudal China has its own Sherlock-like greatest detective in YOUNG DETECTIVE DEE: RISE OF THE SEA DRAGON (@ BLU SALE). Naomi Watts stars as the titular princess in DIANA. More foreign stuff includes Alain Robbe-Grillet's typically surreal SUCCESSIVE SLIDINGS OF PLEASURE (@ BLU SALE), Spanish drama THE ARTIST AND THE MODEL (@ BLU SALE), and the superb French Zombie TV series THE RETURNED (@ BLU SALE). There's a double feature of some long-forgotten '70s action with THE CASSANDRA CROSSING / DOMINO PRINCIPLE. We've got the extremely timely documentary PUSSY RIOT: A PUNK PRAYER (@ SALE). For the kids there's a beautifully remastered Blu-ray of Disney's THE JUNGLE BOOK (@ BLU SALE) and for slightly older kids there's Harrison Ford helping some teens fight bug monsters from outer space in ENDER'S GAME (@ BLU SALE).

Also on the Documentary front we've got one about a company trying to clean up movies for family consumption, CLEANFLIX, and Spike Lee's filmed version of MIKE TYSON: UNDISPUTED TRUTH.

And don't forget to make time for THE COUNSELOR (@ BLU SALE). Directed by the great Ridley Scott from the first original screenplay Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy (who wrote the novels of THE ROAD and NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN), it's a very blackly comedic, very dark thriller about a lawyer who gets in over his head in the world of drug smuggling. Featuring a cast packed with stars like Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz and Brad Pitt, it's just too weird to miss. Ignore the terrible reviews from last fall and check this out for yourself, it's unique, violent, and very funny.
