AFTER EARTH: After a couple of tough breaks (LADY IN THE WATER and THE HAPPENING spring to mind), M. Night Shyamalan has become a bit of a punchline for movie fans. They even left his name off of the trailers for this one, which is too bad, since even when his scripts falter, Night remains a solid visual filmmaker. This Young Adult-themed sci-fi adventure stars Will Smith as the goofily-named Cypher Raige, a military hero in a far-flung future. During a training mission with his son Kitai (real life Smith scion Jaden), their ship crashes, stranding them on a post-apocalyptic and seriously hostile future Earth. Their survival depends on an untested Kitai's ability to overcome his inexpeirence and fear. BLU

The rare sci-fi movie that's mostly about ideas and science as opposed to spectacle, and one of the best entries into the Found Footage subgenre. Consisting mostly of "documentary" footage chronicling a pioneering mission to Jupiter's frozen moon Europa, this film spends most of its time with the scientists and astronauts on board weighing the value of their lives against the potentially historic knowlege they seek. BLU

Yep, the third one. You either want to see this or you don't. BLU

Your favorite doll possessed by a serial killer is back for a sixth installment! After the last two films took a hard turn into out-and-out comedy, this latest entry gets back to a more stripped-down slasher formula for this direct-to-video sequel. We were also pretty pleased to see some old-school animatronic FX and a lot of non-CGI blood for a change. Look out for the nanny-cam scene! BLU @

Beloved geek icon Joss Whedon got a bunch of his Whedonverse performers together at his house and shot this modern-day retelling of Shakespeare's beloved comedy over a couple of weeks during the filming of The Avengers. This was a definite favorite when it played at SIFF this past summer. BLU @
