New Releases for September 24

Even though this week is smaller than most we've had recently, there are still a bunch of great new TV shows, heartfelt comedies, dramas, and dramadies, disturbing glimpses into the darker parts of humanity, and more. Here’s the list:

BLU = Also available to rent on Blu-ray disc

3D BLU = Available for rent on lovely 3D Blu-ray, though you must have a 3D TV to experience the full glory

@ = Available for sale in the store (but we can special order anything, see us for details)

SALE = Click this link to purchase select titles from our online store

IRON MAN 3—What’s better than Tony Stark all suited up, slinging quips and laser beams, flying through the air and saving the world? A whole fleet of super suits flying through the air, slinging laser beams and saving the world! It’s good summer movie fun.  BLU  3D BLU  SALE

THE KINGS OF SUMMER—Three teenage boys, each dealing with his own domestic and personal issues, decide they’ve had enough and escape to a homemade shack in the woods. This funny, sweet, and a little melancholy film from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts and writer Chris Galletta captures both the adolescent need to break free and the ageless desire to seek refuge from the pain of everyday life. And it has the added bonus of Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally.  @  SALE

HANNIBAL: SEASON 1— Hugh Dancy plays an FBI agent blessed/cursed with the gift of getting into the heads of serial killers. He and another agent (Laurence Fishburne!) team up with respected psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen!!) to track down a particularly gruesome killer, and heavy mind games ensue. It’s not gratuitous, but some of it does put the gross in engrossing. And it has the added bonus of The Kids in the Hall’s Scott Thompson.  BLU

V/H/S 2—Another disturbing anthology of home video horror, featuring segments by the directors of The Blair Witch Project, You’re Next, and The RaidBLU

ROOM 237—A fascinating examination of the theories and conspiracies surrounding Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. Our colleague Matt says in City Arts that the film “shows that any artwork can be unpacked in any number of ways, and that choosing a ‘correct’ reading only limits its potential.” Unforeseen delays have caused it to be a bit late to our shelves—ask us if you don’t see it out by Wednesday. BLU  @

3 FILMS BY ROBERTO ROSSELLINI STARRING INGRID BERGMAN—The Criterion Collection presents just as the title says, three films new to DVD and Blu-ray: Stromboli (1950), Europe ’51 (1951), and Journey to Italy (1954).  BLU  @  SALE
