FROM UP ON POPPY HILL—This coming-of-age story set in a small Japanese seaside down in the 1960s follows two teenagers as they learn about the decisions their parents made during World War II. Our colleague Paige says in the September issue of City Arts that the film, from a screenplay by Hayao Miyazaki and directed by his son Goro, is a “beautifully animated story with exquisite detail and subtlety.” BLU  SALE

BLANCANIEVES—A silent, flamenco-infused take on Snow White set in 1920 Andalusia from Spanish director Pablo Berger. It won ten Goya Awards (the Spanish Oscars), including Best Film.  BLU  @

NOW YOU SEE ME—A group of talented magicians dazzle audiences around the world with seemingly impossible feats while pursing a larger secret agenda in this sleight-of-hand action/thriller. The cast adds greatly to the magic, with Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Woody Harrelson, and Dave Franco as the group along with Mark Ruffalo, Mélanie Laurent, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Caine. BLU  @

LORDS OF SALEM—Rob Zombie’s latest horrorshow stars his wife Sheri Moon Zombie as a Salem, Massachusetts DJ who receives a mysterious box labeled “A Gift from the Lords” that stirs up the town’s violent past.  BLU  @

SHARKNADO—Yes, that Sharknado, the SyFy TV movie that chronicles a massive surge of sharks destroying L.A. (and almost made Twitter explode). Our colleague Kevin says in City Arts that, “as a movie fan, it’s almost impossible to deny the joy I felt when Beverly Hills 90210’s Ian Ziering started cutting killer sharks in half, lengthwise, with a chainsaw.” BLU  @
