AMOUR—Michael Haneke’s Oscar-winning portrait of an elderly married couple is devastating in all the senses the word—it causes emotional shock but also evokes a sense of tragic beauty, mostly due to the outstanding performances by Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva.  BLU  @  SALE

BOARDWALK EMPIRE: SEASON 3—Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) returns for more wheeling, dealing and bootlegging in gangster-ridden, Prohibition-era Atlantic City. Among his troubles this season is competition from new cast member Bobby Cannavale.  BLU  SALE

POST TENEBRAS LUX—Carlos Reygadas’ dazzling, dreamlike story of a Mexican family who moves to the countryside in pursuit of an ideal life.  @

EPIC—This enjoyable animated adventure from the creators of Ice Age is part Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and part Tinkerbell with a dash of Ferngully. The impressive voice cast includes Colin Farrell, Christoph Waltz, and Beyonce Knowles, plus Chris O’Dowd and Aziz Ansari as two important slithery creatures.  3D BLU   BLU   @

THE BIG CITY and CHARULATA—The Criterion Collection presents two early 1960s films from legendary director Satyajit Ray. The Big City (in this case, then modern-day Kolkata) is a powerful drama about a wife who takes a job to help support the family. Criterion says it is “at once a hopeful morality tale and a commentary on the identity of the modern Indian woman.” Charulata is set in nineteenth-century India and tells the story of a lonely wife drawn to her husband’s artistic cousin. It’s “a work of subtle textures, a delicate tale of a marriage in jeopardy and a woman taking the first steps toward establishing her own voice.” Both have newly restored 2K digital film transfers and a host of new and archival interviews. For more on these titles, we refer you to the knowledgeable folks at The Dissolve.   BLU  @  Big City SALE   Charulata SALE
