After a few weeks of relatively diminutive lists, the first Tuesday of August brings us bunches of brand new releases. Let’s get to it:

OBLIVION—In this sleek sci-fi from Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski, Tom Cruise and Andrea Riseborough play an effective team helping to keep Earth safe after it was devastated by an invading alien force 60 years ago. Their seemingly perfect routine is disrupted when a woman (Olga Kurylenko) mysteriously crash lands nearby and Cruise is captured by a roving gang of fighters led by Morgan Freeman.  BLU  @

TO THE WONDER—Terrence Malick’s romantic drama follows the ebbs and flows of love and the connections between people. In his review, the last he filed before his death, Roger Ebert noted that the film’s non-traditional storytelling methods (there’s little dialogue, just the score and Malick’s usual visual grandeur) may leave some, especially fans of its stars (Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, Rachel McAdams and Javier Bardem) wanting more, but that the approach is admirable. “Malick, who is surely one of the most romantic and spiritual of filmmakers, appears almost naked here before his audience, a man not able to conceal the depth of his vision.”   BLU  @  SALE

MUD—In the August issue of City Arts, our colleague Jason describes Take Shelter director Jeff Nichols’ new film as “an American masterpiece that draws inspiration from other American masterpieces,” taking cues from 1970s cinema and classic literature. The engrossing story follows two impressionable teenagers (Tye Sheridan and Jacob Lofland) who find a fugitive (Matthew McConaughey) hiding out in the Arkansas riverlands and help him get back to his lost love (Reese Witherspoon).  BLU  @  SALE

THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES—Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes, and Bradley Cooper star in this drama from Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance about fathers and sons, actions and consequences, revenge and forgiveness. BLU  @

WEST OF MEMPHIS—A new documentary on the West Memphis Three from producers Fran Walsh and Peter Jackson and director Amy Berg. It covers some of the same ground as the Paradise Lost trilogy, but focuses on the fight to free the men with new evidence and investigations in to who may have committed such heinous crimes.  BLU  @
