New Releases for June 11: NINJA III Edition

3D BLU = Available for rent on lovely 3D Blu-ray, though you must have a 3D TV to experience the full glory

HOUSE OF CARDS: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON—Based on the UK miniseries, Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright star in this engrossing tale of modern-day Washington D.C. full of secrets, betrayal, revenge, and one man’s almost diabolical need for power. The first two episodes were directed by David Fincher.  BLU  SALE

THE NEWSROOM: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON —Aaron Sorkin’s new HBO show goes behind-the-scenes at a cable news organization. Matt says in City Arts that, “just like The West Wing, it’s a Capra-esque wish-fulfillment fantasy story about flawed people trying to do the right thing—and Sorkin’s dialogue remains as crackling as ever.” But the rest of it…well, just listen to Matt chat with me and Kevin about it on the new Scarecrow Video Podcast.  BLU  @  SALE

OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL—James Franco stars as an Oz mostly just pretending to be great and powerful so he can get the gold (and the ladies) in this dazzlingly looking prequel directed by Sam Raimi. Our colleague Bryan notes in City Arts that Disney “probably thought they were hiring the director of the Spider-Man trilogy, but they also got the guy who did the Evil Dead trilogy,” as there’s a lot of that sort of humor throughout.  BLU  3D BLU SALE

HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS—Don’t let the fairy tale name fool you. This R-rated fantasy starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as the titular supernatural vigilantes is full of creature carcasses, ridiculous weaponry, swear words, and a surprising amount of humor. It’s from director Tommy Wirkola, who did the Norwegian zombie-Nazi movie Dead Snow.  BLU  3D BLU  @

WRONG—The new film from Quentin Dupieux, director of Rubber (aka that killer tire movie), follows a man on a surreal quest for his lost dog. Plus, William Fitchner!  BLU @  SALE

NINJA III: THE DOMINATION—A massively entertainingly martial arts movie from 1984 starring Lucinda Dickey (who you know from the Breakin’ movies) as an aerobics instructor possessed by a ninja’s spirit. That means there are plenty of leg warmers, leotards, throwing stars, and floating swords—and that’s just in the first half-hour. Once just a gem of our VHS collection, it finally makes its DVD and Blu-ray debut thanks to the good people at Shout! Factory. We can’t recommend this enough. BLU  @  SALE
