SIDE EFFECTS & more New Releases for May 21

The rain has returned, but we’ve got something to turn your gray skies blue, or rather Blu, with the Blu-ray debut of two Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli classics and many more high-def titles. There are also plenty of new action and/or gangster movies, witches and vampires, silent French films, and two documentaries on indie record stores. Here’s the list:

BLU = Also available to rent on Blu-ray disc

@ = Available for sale in the store (but we can special order anything, see us for details)

SIDE EFFECTS—Steven Soderbergh’s latest film could simply be a “pharmaceutical thriller” condemning our dependence on mood-enhancing drugs, but as our colleague Matt points out in City Arts, “Soderbergh is too smart for something so trite. Instead he’s turned out a clever, very dark and often funny exploitation movie.” It stars Rooney Mara, Jude Law, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Soderbergh MVP Channing Tatum.  BLU  @  SALE

THE LAST STAND—Roll your eyes if you must, but believe me when I say Governor Schwarzenegger’s kick ‘em & punch ‘em & shoot-‘em-up is actually pretty good. It’s a simple, classic premise: A bad guy is headed straight for a small town and the sheriff and his rag-tag crew must man up to take him down. Plus, it’s from Kim Jee-woon, director of I Saw The Devil and The Good, The Bad, and The Weird. BLU  @  SALE

STRUCK BY LIGHTNINGGlee’s Chris Colfer wrote and stars in this smart, dark comedy about the torments of high school. The film, which was the Opening Night movie at last year’s Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, features a fine ensemble cast including Allison Janney, Angela Kinsey, Dermot Mulroney, Christina Hendricks, and Rebel Wilson.  @

TRUE BLOOD: SEASON 5—Sookie Stackhouse is back! This season she and her supernatural entourage are embroiled in a political power play between the Vampire Authority and the more extreme vampire fundamentalists who want humans as food not friends. BLU  @

MEDIUM COOL—The Criterion Collection presents Haskell Wexler’s compelling blend of fiction and documentary that examines race relations and the turbulent social climate in 1968 Chicago through the eyes of a TV cameraman (Robert Forster). It includes extended scenes shot amidst the riots at the Democratic National Convention. BLU  @  SALE

HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE and MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO—Two from Hayao Miyazaki, new on Blu-ray. Totoro may be one of the most perfect family-friendly films ever made. Paige says in City Arts that it's about "the power of nature, how trust in our family and friends, and finding the strange and fantastic in our daily lives.” Click on the covers below to buy them from our online store.   BLU  @  SALE
