The Scarecrow Video Podcast Episode 40: David Schmader

Matt is joined by special guest David Schmader, Seattle writer and Film Editor for The Stranger, to talk a little about the ins and outs of film criticism & reviewing in these times of ubiquitous bloggers and tightened freelance budgets.

Then Matt proceeds to attempt a defense of Paul Verhoeven's notorious much-maligned (and misunderstood, Matt thinks) 1995 opus Showgirls. It's a dirty movie and they get into details, so this episode is very NSFW.

You can listen to the podcast on our site or on iTunes.

We have Showgirls featuring David Schmader's legendary commentary track for rent on DVD and Blu-ray in our Paul Verhoeven section (and, if you're more daring, the sequel Showgirls 2: Penny's From Heaven in our New Release section). We also have Mr. Schmader's solo play Straight for rent in our Performance Art section.

You'll find previous Scarecrow Video Podcast episodes, including our episode with Brian Alter from Grand Illusion Cinema and the episode with Jason Miller from Central Cinema, in our site archives.

We welcome your questions and comments at podcast@scarecrow.com.

During the episode, Mr. Schmader mentions he recently enjoyed The Night of the Hunter, which we have for rent & sale here in the store. He also praises Megan Griffiths' Eden, which will open at SIFF Cinema on May 3. And for further Verhoeven, viewing Matt recommends his 1975 film Katie Tippel.
