New Releases for May 7

The blue skies have brought us a flood of new Blu-ray titles this week, along with critically acclaimed indie films, big Hollywood action, two TV series finales, and more. Here's the list:

UPSTREAM COLOR—Primer director Shane Carruth writes, directs and stars with Amy Seimetz (star of Megan Griffiths' The Off Hours and writer/director of Sun Don't Shine) in this experimental and poetic film that exists somewhere at the intersection of thriller, romantic drama, and science fiction.  BLU  @  SALE


MAMA—Two young girls orphaned in a car crash in the woods are raised by a monstrous spirit. Years later they are found and placed with their father’s brother and his girlfriend. Soon they discover they are, as our colleague Bryan says in the May issue of City Arts, “stuck in the middle of a custody battle between their living relatives and their supernatural Mama.” It was produced by Guillermo Del Toro and stars the great Jessica Chastain.  BLU  @  SALE


JACK REACHERThe Usual Suspects’ writer / Oscar-winner Christopher McQuarrie adapts the novels by Lee Child into an kicking and punching spectacle starring Tom Cruise as the titular army cop-turned-private investigator tracking down a killer. Cruise delivers his usual charisma and Werner Herzog makes a great villain.  BLU  @ 


THE RABBI’S CAT—A cat eats a parrot, gains the power of speech, and adventure ensues in this animated fantasy based on the graphic novels by Joann Sfar.  BLU  @  SALE


30 ROCK: SEASON 7--The final season of one of the great sitcoms of recent times, and certainly one that's had a lot of its lines creep into our lexicon: "Blergh!" "I want to go to there!", etc. What's your favorite line? Here's one of mine:
