New Releases for April 9

A second wave of UK imports washes up on our shelves this week, along with classic noirs, westerns and dramas, martial arts spectaculars, old-school TV shows, nature documentaries, a surprising amount of opera, and more Blu-rays than you can shake a high-definition stick at. Here’s the list:

BLU = Also available to rent on Blu-ray disc

@ = Available for sale in the store (but we can special order anything, see us for details)

SALE = Click this link to purchase select titles from our online store

HYDE PARK ON HUDSON—Bill Murray as FDR? Yeah, I'm gonna watch that. He and Laura Linney star in the based-on-real-events story of the King and Queen of England’s visit to upstate New York on the eve of WWII. Olivia Williams plays Eleanor Roosevelt, so you know what that means: Rushmore reunion! BLU  @  SALE

AMOUR—Michael Haneke’s Oscar-winning film is a quiet, heartbreaking portrait of an elderly couple—Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva—whose lives begin a slow, painful decline after she suffers a stroke. Like many of Haneke’s films, it can be devastating. We have a PAL Code 2 import DVD for rent—please ask us if you need assistance playing import discs.

IN ANOTHER COUNTRY--Isabelle Huppert stars as three different women, each visiting a small Korean resort town with her own fate in store, in this bright, romantic comedy that's the first English-language film from Korean director Hong Sang-soo.

THE SORCERER AND THE WHITE SNAKE—Jet Li stars as the titular sorcerer who must do battle with supernatural forces and mythical creatures to save a man and the woman he loves...who just happens to be disguised as a snake.  BLU

BOSS: SEASON TWO—Kelsey Grammer returns as the ruthless mayor of Chicago who will resort to any number of devious schemes to maintain power.

GATE OF HELL and NAKED LUNCH—The Criterion Collection has two releases today. Up first is Teinosuke Kinugasa’s 1953 visually innovative and gripping epic of love and battle set in twelfth-century Japan. It  won Oscars for Best Foreign Language film and Best Costume Design. The second is the Blu-ray debut of David Cronenberg’s surreal adaptation of William S. Burroughs’s novel. Click on the covers below to purchase them from our online store.  BLU  @
