New Releases for March 19 and March 22

My goodness! There’s an awful lot of power packed into this week’s new release list. Let’s get right to it:

BLU = Also available to rent on Blu-ray disc

3D BLU = Available for rent on lovely 3D Blu-ray, though you must have a 3D TV to experience the full glory

THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY—Part one of Peter Jackson’s new trilogy takes the unassuming Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) from his cozy Hobbit house to the edge of a cliff as he follows Gandolf and a band of dwarves on an adventure. Get comfy in Middle Earth, we’ll be here a while.  BLU  3D BLU  @  SALE

ZERO DARK THIRTY—I was devestated as the credits rolled after 157 minutes, but I was still on the edge of my seat and felt like I could watch another two hours. Screenwriter Mark Boal and director Kathryn Bigelow’s powerful dramatic procedural takes us through the search for Osama Bin Laden, led by the fantastic Jessica Chastain.   BLU  @  SALE

RUST AND BONE— Matthias Schoenaerts and Marion Cotillard (in an Oscar-nominated performance) play characters broken for different reasons who, slowly and imperfectly, attempt to put each other back together in this intense and surprisingly touching film.  BLU  @  SALE

BACHELORETTE—Take four friends from high school and add one wedding-eve, then mix in cocaine, booze, and a generous dollop of unresolved issues. Sit back and prepare for both laughter and the occasional “awww” sigh with stars Rebel Wilson, Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, Lizzy Caplan, and Adam Scott. Side note: when was the last time you watched Party Down?

BADLANDS and THE LIFE AND DEATH OF COLONEL BLIMP—Our sale on March’s new releases from The Criterion Collection continues with Terrence Malick’s powerful debut film and Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger’s classic portrait of a British solider. Click on the covers below to buy the DVD or Blu-ray from our online store.  BLU

And because studios sometimes like to mix things up and release DVD/Blus for your immediate weekend needs, this Friday, March 22, we bring you:

LES MISERABLES—Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, and deserving Oscar winner Anne Hathaway are ready for their close-up in the latest film adaptation of the musical based on Victor Hugo’s epic. It brought at least one self-professed musical detractor to the brink of tears.  BLU  @  SALE

THIS IS 40—Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann, Melissa McCarthy, Jason Segel, John Lithgow, Albert Brooks, Judd Apatow. Need we go on?  BLU SALE
