LIFE OF PI—Screenwriter David Magee and director Ang Lee took Yann Martel’s seemingly impossible-to-adapt novel and created what our colleague Paige calls in City Arts “a fantastical and moving story about faith and survival, letting go and starting fresh.” And yes, there is a tiger. The dazzling effects won it Oscars for Cinematography and Visual Effects along with Lee’s surprising but deserved win for Best Director. Watch it on 3D Blu-ray if you can.  BLU  3D BLU  @  SALE

HITCHCOCK—Anthony Hopkins does his best Master of Suspense in this look at the making-of Psycho, which reveals more about his relationship with his wife and collaborator Alma Reville (the fantastic-as-always Helen Mirren) and his preoccupation with his leading ladies (in this case, Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh) than it does about filmmaking. Drink every time they show Hitch in profile!  BLU

RISE OF THE GUARDIANS—Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, Sandman, the Easter Bunny, and the newly minted Jack Frost combine forces to protect the world’s children from the encroaching evil of the Boogeyman. It’s got adventure, humor, and heart, with excellent voices from Alec Baldwin, Isla Fisher, Hugh Jackman, Jude Law, and Chris Pine.   BLU  3D BLU  @  SALE

SOUND CITY—Dave Grohl’s enthusiastic and engrossing homage to the L.A. recording studio and an analog soundboard that changed his life. Among the many musicians paying tribute are Stevie Nicks, Tom Petty, Rick Springfield, and Neil Young.   BLU  @  SALE

SMASHED—This short but powerful portrait of an alcoholic stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as a first-grade teacher approaching the brink and Aaron Paul as her enabling husband. There's also strong support from Megan Mullaly, Nick Offerman, and Octavia Spencer.
