THE MASTER-ful New Releases for February 26

It’s a big week for family films, imports from France and the UK, and critically acclaimed films from last year--plus a special bonus release on Saturday (hint: sparkly vampires). Here’s the list:

BLU = Also available to rent on Blu-ray disc

3D BLU = Available for rent on lovely 3D Blu-ray, though you must have a 3D TV to experience the full glory

@ = Available for sale in the store (but we can special order anything, see us for details)

SALE = Click this link to purchase select titles from our online store

THE MASTER—Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, and Philip Seymour Hoffman deliver intense performances that greatly enrich writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson’s examination of cult-like movements, their leaders, and the circumstances that draw people to them.   BLU  @  SALE

HOLY MOTORS—Writer/director Leos Carax’s dazzling film is better experienced than summarized, but I’ll try: A man (Denis Levant) gets in a limo and goes off to work. His “appointments” throughout the day transform him into totally different people with duties ranging from the seemingly ordinary to the downright bizarre. Matt says in City Arts that the film is “simultaneously exhilarating, largely interpretive and often inscrutable treatise on the death of celluloid as a medium and the apocalyptic, evolutionary transformation in store for cinema as an art form.”   BLU  SALE

CHASING MAVERICKS—Chilly weather will be with us for several more months, but you can keep warm with the sun and sand in this heartwarming tale of a master surfer (Gerard Butler) and his aspiring apprentice chasing the world's biggest waves.

HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE— This Oscar nominee for Best Documentary Feature profiles the brave activists who formed ACT UP and spurred the government and pharmaceutical companies to reverse the course of the AIDS epidemic.  @  SALE

AFRICAJoin David Attenborough for this new BBC nature documentary that explores the home of the most diverse animal life on Earth.  BLU  @

CHRONICLE OF A SUMMER—In the summer of 1960, filmmaker-anthropologist Jean Rouch and sociologist Edgar Morin asked a diverse group of Parisian residents, “Are you happy?” The result is cinema-verite that captures the hopes and dreams of individuals and a city. It’s new from the Criterion Collection.  BLU  @  SALE
