New Releases for January 8

FRANKENWEENIE—Twenty-eight years after his live-action short about canine reanimation, Tim Burton creates a feature length, animated version with his signature design. The voice cast is excellent, especially Winona Ryder as the Frankenstein’s next door neighbor.  BLU   3D BLU   @    SALE


SAMSARA—Start the new year by taking a step back and getting some perspective on our world with this dazzling portrait of life on Earth from Baraka director Ron Fricke. Get this one on Blu-ray if you can.  BLU  SALE


DREDD—This second attempt to launch the British comic book hero into cinematic fame is one of our staff’s favorites of last year. Matt says in City Arts, it’s “as if Robocop and Idiocracy had an angry, fascist baby. Funny and bloody and decidedly unpretentious.”  BLU  3D BLU  @   SALE


COMPLIANCE—A subject of much conversation when it played at SIFF 2012, this thriller based on real events stars Ann Dowd as a fast food manager who receives a call from a police officer who informs her that one of her employees has committed a crime. As the evening goes on he gives her increasingly questionable instructions on how to deal with the alleged thief.   BLU  @  SALE


GAME CHANGE—You wouldn't think you'd be ready to relive the 2008 Presidential Election, but you'll be pulled in to this engrossing HBO movie with Ed Harris as John McCain and Julianne Moore as Sarah Palin.  BLU
