DARK KNIGHT RISES & more excellent New Releases for December 4

Holy Mega Week! This is one of the best new release weeks of the year, so we’ll get right to the list. We should note that many of these would make excellent gifts. Here we go:

BLU = Also available to rent on Blu-ray disc

3D BLU = Available for rent on lovely 3D Blu-ray, though you must have a 3D TV to experience the full glory.

@ = Available for sale in the store (but we can special order anything, see us for details.)

Our online store is nearing the end of its revamp--please email us at or give us a call at (206) 524-8554 if you need to buy something without setting foot in the store.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES—Christopher Nolan ends his Batman trilogy in fine form. In related news, we also have the Dark Knight Trilogy with all three films for sale on Blu-ray & DVD.    BLU  @

BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD—Our colleague Kevin Clarke says in the current issue of City Arts, “Bursting at the seams with life, energy and humanity, this contemporary fairy-tale about a little girl named Hushpuppy, her father and their ramshackle community on the outskirts of New Orleans is more like a pulsing, living thing than a movie.” The driving force behind this film, arguably one of the best of the year, is its young star Quvenzhané Wallis.    BLU  @

HOPE SPRINGS—Meryl Streep drags her crusty, Hank Hill-esque husband Tommy Lee Jones on retreat to re-ignite their passion with the help of counselor Steve Carell. All deliver their usual amounts of charm.

V/H/S—We are admittedly biased towards any film in this day and age that uses a VHS tape as its major plot device, but this one has been verified good by many who aren’t as enamored with the format. Six directors, including Ti West (The Innkeepers) present a terrifying horror anthology centered on a group of thieves sent into a creepy house to steal a creepy videocassette.   BLU  @

AI WEIWEI: NEVER SORRY— Alison Klayman’s portrait of the artist/architect/activist, from his family life and creative process to his clashes with the Chinese government. New York Magazine's David Edelstein listed it as one of his top ten movies of the year.    BLU  @

PURPLE NOON—Rene Clément’s 1960 adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s The Talented Mr. Ripley made Alain Delon an instant star. The new Criterion Collection release features archival interviews with Delon and Highsmith along with a video interview with Clément scholar Denitza Bantcheva. Note: The trailer doesn't have English subtitles, but you'll get the gist.    BLU  @
