New Releases for October 2

It’s a pretty average week for new titles here at Scarecrow: Classic and modern TV shows, well-hyped video games, a backlog of Blu-rays, indie comedies, PAL imports of Norwegian family films, holiday ghost stories with Christopher Lee—you know, the usual. Here’s the list:

BLU = Also available to rent on Blu-ray disc

3D BLU = Available for rent on lovely 3D Blu-ray, though you must have a 3D TV to experience the full glory.

@ = Available for sale in the store (but we can special order anything, see us for details.)

Our online store is nearing the end of its revamp--please email us at scarecrow@scarecrow.com or give us a call at (206) 524-8554 if you need to buy something without setting foot in the store.

GRASSROOTS—A dramatized version of our city’s recent past, based on Phil Campbell’s book about Grant Cogswell’s run for Seattle City Council on a pro-monorail platform. Avatar’s Joel David Moore plays Cogswell with Jason Biggs as Campbell and Cedric the Entertainer as Richard McIver. And Tom Arnold runs the Re-Bar! Plus, any movie where someone says "Meet me at The Comet in 20 minutes" is worth watching.  @

DARK SHADOWS—Johnny Depp (of course) stars in Tim Burton’s take on the 70s soap opera. Our colleague Bryan says in the October issue of City Arts that the “odd mix of Burton’s cartoon Gothicism, some goofy comic premises and reverence for the operatic storylines of the show make for a surprising amount of fun.”   BLU  @

IRON SKY—A science fiction spoof in which a group of Nazis that had been hiding out on the dark side of the Moon attempt to take over the Earth. BLU  @

PEOPLE LIKE US—When his estranged father dies unexpectedly, a young wheeler-dealer (Chris Pine) discovers he has a sister (Elizabeth Banks) he never knew and is charged with delivering her an inheritance he desperately needs. This inspiring family drama is the feature directorial debut from Alex Kurtzman, who wrote the Star Trek reboot.   BLU

THE NEW GIRL: SEASON 1—A recently dumped Zooey Deschanel takes up residency with some equally unbalanced gentlemen in the first season of her charming sitcom. Have some tomato soup delivered while you watch it.
