THE AVENGERS & many other New Releases for September 25

This week’s new releases can best be summed up in one word: SUPER. Super foreign films, super TV shows, and lots of super heroes. Here’s the list:

BLU = Also available to rent on Blu-ray disc

3D BLU = Available for rent on lovely 3D Blu-ray, though you must have a 3D TV to experience the full glory.

@ = Available for sale in the store (but we can special order anything, see us for details.)

Our online store is nearing the end of its revamp--please email us at or give us a call at (206) 524-8554 if you need to buy something without setting foot in the store.

THE AVENGERS—In the September issue of City Arts, our colleague Bryan says Joss Whedon’s supermega hit, “does a great job of balancing character with spectacle while deftly mixing the mythologies of the four Marvel Comics movies it connects.” Its “smart-assed sense of fun” was responsible for the loudest laugh I’ve uttered in a theater in a long time. Enjoy.   3D BLU  BLU  @

DAMSELS IN DISTRESSThe Last Days of Disco writer/director Whit Stillman’s first film in over a decade follows a group of bubbly college friends looking to liven things up among their peer group while occasionally breaking out in to dance numbers.  BLU  @

PORTLANDIA: SEASON 2— The dream of the ‘90s is alive! Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen return for another fine season. We also have a Season 1 & 2 DVD set for sale at the store.  BLU  @

THE TALL MAN—Jessica Biel plays a nurse in an isolated mining town tracking the disappearance of many of the town’s children, including her own son, in this dark, violent thriller from Martyrs director Pascal Laugier. It comes recommended by the horror fan faction here at Scarecrow.  BLU  @

EATING RAOUL and THE GAME—Criterion adds two new titles to their fine collection: Paul Bartel’s 1982 “bawdy, gleefully amoral tale of conspicuous consumption” starring Mary Woronov, Robert Beltran (Chakotay from Star Trek: Voyager) and Mr. Bartel himself (the NSFW Criterion trailer is here); and David Fincher’s 1997 mindbending noir-ish thriller starring Michael Douglas, Deborah Kara Unger, and Sean Penn.  BLU  @
