BOARDWALK EMPIRE: SEASON 2—Steve Buscemi leads a fine cast through another tense season of scheming, scandal, and betrayal in Prohibition-era Atlantic City.   BLU  @

HOMELAND: SEASON 1—Claire Danes stars as a CIA agent uncovering layers of suspicion around an American POW (Damian Lewis) who may or may not be an Al Qaeda sleeper agent in this critically acclaimed Showtime series. BLU  @

THE PIRATES!: BAND OF MISFITS—A funny and clever adventure from Aardman Studios (The Wallace & Gromit folks), featuring Hugh Grant as a well-meaning but under-performing Pirate Captain desperate to win his vocation’s top prize, Martin Freeman as his cautious “Number Two,” and David Tennant as a lovesick Charles Darwin, who starts the story rolling when he discovers the Pirate Captain’s “parrot” is really a dodo bird.  BLU 3D BLU @

BATTLESHIP—Do you enjoy loud movies where attractive people defend Earth from large, evil things? Who doesn’t? Warning: Don’t get your hopes up. We’ve heard no one actually yells “You sunk my battleship!”  BLU  @

MONSIEUR LAZHAR—An Algerian immigrant steps in to take over and aid a Montreal middle school class reeling from the death of their beloved teacher in this moving drama. It was nominated for Best Foreign Language film at this year’s Oscars.  BLU  @

QUADROPHENIA, LONESOME, NORMAN MAILER—Criterion welcomes two new titles to its collection: Quadrophenia, a rebellious youth rock opera featuring songs by The Who, and Lonesome, Paul Fejos’ 1928 love story set in Coney Island. Our colleague Mark called it “a one-of-a-kind extravaganza” in the August issue of City Arts. Both films include a wealth of special features. Also new today, Criterion’s Eclipse series presents three experimental films by Norman Mailer: Maidstone, Wild 90, and Beyond the Law.  BLU  @
