New Releases for July 31

This week’s modest but mighty New Release collection includes many Egyptian imports, inspiring documentaries, Marilyn Monroe blu-rays, and movies for and about the American teenager. Here’s the list:

BLU = Also available to rent on Blu-ray disc

@ = Available for sale in the store (but we can special order anything, see us for details)

Our online store is still undergoing a revamp--please email us at scarecrow@scarecrow.com or give us a call at (206) 524-8554 if you need to buy something without setting foot in the store.

DETENTION—Think back to SIFF 2011…Ok, remember that high school horror/comedy that you either saw or heard everyone talking about? Josh Hutcherson (who you now know as Peeta from The Hunger Games) and Shanley Caswell star in this enjoyable film that’s part Scream and part Breakfast Club with dashes of Donnie Darko and Back to the Future plus a heap of pop culture references. It's from Torque director Joseph Kahn.  BLU @

LAST DAYS HERE—Don Argott and Demian Fenton’s inspiring documentary follows Bobby Liebling, front man for underground heavy metal band Pentagram, as he rises to the challenge of recovering from years of self-destruction and returning to music. @

HATFIELDS & MCCOYS—“Devil” Anse Hatfield (Kevin Costner) and Randall McCoy (Bill Paxton) return home from the Civil War, settle down on opposite sides of the river, and start a bloody ruckus in the History Channel’s version of the ultimate family feud. These days they’d just have a reality TV show.  @

WE THE PARTY—Mario van Peebles’ coming-of-age story centered around five high school friends growing up in the Facebook era, with co-stars Michael Jai White, Tiny Lister, and Snoop Dogg.  BLU

LE HAVRE—The Criterion Collection presents Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki’s “charming, deadpan delight” paring a young African refugee (Blondin Miguel) facing deportation with an aging French bohemian (André Wilms) who steps in to help.  BLU @
