New Releases for July 17

This week’s New Release list has a broad spectrum of comedies and science fiction, two films on the A.V. Club’s Best Films of 2012 So Far list, and more Blu-rays than should be legally permissible under state and federal laws (scroll down to the bottom of the post to see them). Here’s the list:

BLU = Also available to rent on Blu-ray disc

3D BLU  = Available on 3D Blu-ray. You must have a 3D TV for the full three-dimensional experience

@ = Available for sale in the store (but we can special order anything, see us for details)

Our online store is still undergoing a revamp--please email us at or give us a call at (206) 524-8554 if you need to buy something without setting foot in the store.

FRIENDS WITH KIDS—Two platonic best friends (Adam Scott and writer/director Jennifer Westfeldt) decide to become parents together and surprisingly, complications ensue. Westfeldt and Adam Scott are great, as are their supporting cast of friends: Jon Hamm and Kristen Wiig as an increasingly estranged couple, and Maya Rudolph and Chris O’Dowd, who perfectly encapsulate the love and tested patience in a long-term relationship.  BLU

CASA DE MI PADRE—What would happen Will Ferrell and the team behind films like Anchorman made a Mexican soap opera? What happens when you add Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal from Y Tu Mama Tambien? And most of the film in is Spanish? I am eager to find out. BLU  @

EXTRATERRESTRIAL—This sci-fi/romance from Spain was a hit at this year’s Seattle International Film Festival. Caution: the subtitles in this trailer include a few swear words.  @

THE THREE STOOGES—The Farrelly Brothers deliver their take on the classic comedy trio. I know what you may be thinking, but any movie featuring Larry David as a nun should be given a decent chance.  BLU  @

SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN—Ewan McGregor, Kristin Scott Thomas, Amr Waked, and Emily Blunt star in Lasse Hallstrom’s inspiring film about love, politics, and dreams of fishing in the desert.  BLU  @

THE TURIN HORSE—Hungarian director Bela Tarr’s reportedly last film beautifully explores life and mortality. This is one of the films on the A.V. Club’s Best Films of 2012 So Far list.  BLU  @
