New Releases for June 12: A Game of Shadows

This week brings a bunch of operas, ballets, TV shows, and comedies, along with the best Criterion release day in recent memory. Here’s the list:

SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS—Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law travel about Europe and exude manly charm as they take on the diabolical Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris). BLU  @

 

GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE—In the June issue of City Arts, our colleague Bryan says this goofy Marvel sequel was underwhelming on the big screen but, “will probably be more enjoyable in your living room with some beer, which seems to be the bar the filmmakers were aiming for.” It stars Nicolas Cage’s flaming skullhead and Idris Elba as his wine-swilling sidekick. EPISODES: THE FIRST SEASON—A British husband and wife writing team have hopes for a big hit when they bring their TV show to the US, only to have it become a big mess thanks to Matt LeBlanc (playing himself). IN DARKNESSAgnieszka Holland’s Oscar-nominated drama based on the real-life story of a group of Jewish refugees hiding in the sewer of a Nazi-occupied Polish town and the maintenance man who discovers them. @

 

TOO BIG TO FAIL—Curtis Hanson directs all-star cast in this story of the 2008 financial collapse, featuring Paul Giamatti as Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, Billy Crudup as Timothy Geithner, and William Hurt as Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson. BLU  @
