New Releases for April 3

A short but sweet list of New Releases for the first week of April:

BLU = Also available for rent on Blu-ray

@ = Available for sale in the store

SALE = Available for sale from our online mercantile

WAR HORSE—Steven Spielberg’s movie is not unlike another of his works, Empire of The Sun. Just replace young Christian Bale with a beloved horse and China with Europe during World War I and you’ll get the idea. That might sound ridiculous, but the film succeeds. Our colleague Matt noted War Horse has a David Lean feel to it, and he’s right. For those keeping track, this is the last of the Oscar Best Picture nominees to arrive on our shelves. We’re just waiting for the winner.  BLU @   SALE

WE BOUGHT A ZOO—Cameron Crowe’s sweet and moving film based on the true story of a family in mourning who moved out to the country and took over a small zoo. Matt Damon plays the father struggling to reconnect with his teenage son and young daughter (Colin Ford and Maggie Elizabeth Jones), and Scarlett Johansson is leader of the zoo’s motley crew of employees, including Almost Famous’ Patrick Fugit (who has a monkey on his shoulder for most of the film).  BLU  @   SALE

TYRANNOSAUR—Two lonely people—one an angry drunk widow, one a seemingly happy but long-suffering wife--find strength in each other in this powerful and critically acclaimed British drama written and directed by Paddy Considine.  @

BEING ELMO: A PUPPETEER’S JOURNEY—Constance Marks’ documentary follows Kevin Clash, the man behind the cherished Sesame Street character, from his childhood in Baltimore to the peak of the Elmo phenomenon. Clash’s talent and lifelong devotion to his work is truly inspiring. I went in a Elmo-hater and came out a proud fan.  @

TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY— Mekhi Phifer joins the Torchwood crew as they investigate a mysterious phenomenon--people on Earth have stopped dying. Bill Pullman plays a killer who survives the execution that starts it all.  BLU  @
