New Releases for March 13

Oscar-nominated and Oscar-worthy performances abound in this humdinger of a New Release week. There are also Italian films, environmentally conscious documentaries, classic westerns, a lot of new Blu-rays (you’ll find them at the bottom of the list), and much more. Here you go:

BLU = Also available for rent on Blu-ray

3D BLU = Also available for rent on 3D Blu-ray

THE DESCENDANTS—In the recent issue of City Arts, our colleague Spenser said that Alexander Payne’s latest film is a, “carefully observed approach to genuine human drama and personal pains…counterbalanced by the director’s gift for subtle humor.” George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, and Amara Miller are excellent and Payne, along with Nat Faxon and Jim Rash (Community’s Dean Pelton), won an Oscar for its screenplay.  BLU

THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN—All the clever action and adventure of a Steven Spielberg-directed, Peter Jackson-produced film without any of the pesky laws of physics or gravity to get in the way. It is quite enjoyable.  BLU  3D BLU  @   SALE

MELANCHOLIA—Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Kirsten Dunst star in Lars von Trier’s dark psychodrama about a wedding, depression, and the end of the world.  BLU  @   SALE

YOUNG ADULT—Charlize Theron and Patton Oswalt are brilliant in this dark, dark comedy written by Diablo Cody and directed by Jason Reitman.  BLU  @   SALE

MY WEEK WITH MARILYN—It’s a challenge to play an icon without it feeling like a mere impersonation, but Michelle Williams succeeds with her nuanced portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in this film, set in London during the filming of The Prince and The Showgirl. Kenneth Branagh plays the movie's director, Sir Laurence Olivier.  BLU   @

THE THREE MUSKETEERS—Good swashbuckling fun with Logan Lerman, Ray Stevenson, Milla Jovovich, and Orlando Bloom.  BLU  @

THE SWELL SEASON— The bittersweet and inspirational real-life story of Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, who won an Oscar for their song "Falling Slowly" from the film Once. They formed a band, made a record, embarked on a world tour, and fell in and out of love. @

HAPPY FEET TWO—More singing! More dancing! More penguins! This sequel also features Brad Pitt and Matt Damon as krill facing an existential crisis.  BLU @
