New Releases for February 28: Leap Day Eve

This week's New Releases bring foreign TV shows, classic live-action Disney movies, silent films, and one of this year's love letters to the movies. Here’s the list:

BLU = Also available for rent on Blu-ray disc

@ = Available for sale at the store

SALE = Available for sale from our online store

HUGO—If you scoffed when you heard Martin Scorsese was making a family-friendly 3D movie, please sit down with a big plate of crow and enjoy this film. Save the date: Hugo editor Thelma Schoonmaker will be at Scarecrow on Wednesday, March 7.     BLU   @   SALE

MANDRILL—For more on this Chilean action film, we refer you to badass-film expert Outlaw VernBLU  @

THE CATECHISM CATACLYSM—Todd Rohal’s (The Guatemalan Handshake) comedy starring Steve Little (Stevie Janowski in Eastbound & Down). Among the locals filmmakers on hand for this film are producers Megan Griffiths (The Off Hours) and Lacey Leavitt (Blood on the Flat Track), cinematographer Ben Kasulke, and a cameo by Lynn Shelton.  @

JOHNNY ENGLISH REBORN—After watching years of Black Adder marathons, I am programmed to have nothing but unconditional love for Rowan Atkinson.

I MELT WITH YOU—Four longtime friends—Thomas Jane, Jeremy Piven, Christian McKay, and Rob Lowe—implode in a haze of drugs and alcohol.

JUSTICE LEAGUE: DOOM—It's the Justice League vs. the Legion of DOOM! No offense to Ryan Reynolds, but Nathan Fillion does a fine job as the voice of Green Lantern. I’d like to see that in live action.  Also, Bane does some pretty messed-up things in this film. BLU  @

VANYA ON 42nd STREET—The Criterion Collection presents Louie Malle’s last film, a behind-the-scenes look at a rehersals of Chekov’s Uncle Vanya (as adapted by David Mamet). The cast includes Wallace Shawn, Julianne Moore, Brooke Smith, and George Gaynes (Henry from Punky Brewster and Commandant Lassard from Police Academy).  BLU  @  SALE
