Outdoor movies and more for the last weekend of July

With the bulk of the rainy weather behind us (fingers crossed), this weekend is a good time to finally take in a movie under the stars. Three Dollar Bill Cinema kicks off their Rock & Roll Fantasy summer movie series on Friday night with XANADU at Cal Anderson Park. It starts at 8:30pm, is free to attend, and they'll be plenty of tasty goods on hand for your snacking needs. South Lake Union's CINEMA ON THE LAWN is also Friday night around 9pm with KICK-ASS. If you, like all smart humans, are a fan of THE PRINCESS BRIDE, you have your choice of outdoor venues to see it on  Saturday night. All the door proceeds from Fremont Outdoor Movies' screening at 8:30pm goes to benefit the excellent folks at Solid Ground. You can also cheer on Wesley and Buttercup under the Space Needle with Seattle Center's Movies at the Mural. The film stars around 9pm.

Northwest Film Forum has Nicolas Pereda: Perpetual Motion, a week long series of films by the Mexican director whose work provides a portrait of working class Mexico. It begins Friday with the Seattle premiere of SUMMER OF GOLIATH and continues with JUNTOS (TOGETHER), PERPETUUM MOTION, and DONDE ESTAN SUS HISTORIAS? (WHERE ARE THE STORIES?). Pereda will be in attendance for the Monday-Thursday shows and there will be a Happy Hour with him on Wednesday, August 3rd at 4pm . Also this week at NWFF is WINSTON CHURCHILL: WALKING WITH DESTINY, a documentary all about Mr. Churchill's rise to political greatness, narrated by Ben Kingsley.

Scarecrow staff favorites GALAXY QUEST and the recent SIFF sensation TROLLHUNTER are at Central Cinema this week, along with the found footage frenzy of COLLIDE-O-SCOPE on Monday, the original 1981 Ray Harryhausen greatness of CLASH OF THE TITANS on Wednesday and the POP PRINCESS SING-A-LONG on Thursday.

Grand Illusion Cinema's big fundraising night with raffles, a silent auction, and a 35mm print of  REAR WINDOW  is on Saturday the 30th. We have tickets at Scarecrow for both the 6:30pm and 9:30om shows. This week the GI has TRIGUN: BADLANDS RUMBLE, based on the popular manga series and animated TV show (we have it for rent if you're curious). There will be dubbed and subtitled screenings throughout the week, so check the GI's site for details.
