Happy (Belated) Birthday, Martin Scorsese

This last Friday was the birthday of Mr. Martin Scorsese. While we here at The Crow were running around super busy with the coming rush of holiday traffic, a thoughtful person put on "A Personal Journey With Martin Scorsese Through American Movies." Personal is certainly the word to describe this four-hour documentary (produced by the British Film Institute), as Mr. Scorsese starts right at the beginning of cinema and leads the lucky viewer on a tour of his favorite films, directors and moments in movie history. But instead of a chronological, straight up highlight reel of American cinema, Mr. Scorsese groups films and filmmakers by their styles (I hope this means he'd be pleased with our director's section here at the store) and singles out particular directors (like Kubrick, Ford and Sirk) for the way they went about telling their stories. For me, watching it in one sitting once while sick, it felt like he'd just invited me over for tea we ended up spending a pleasant afternoon chatting about movies. Four hours is nothing. I didn't want it to end. But the journey stops right around the time he starts to make movies, and we all know the rest. The next time you find yourself at a viewing crossroads, check this out. And then go see THE DEPARTED if you haven't already (or again, if you have).
