Viewing this weekend

Sure, Jim Forman says it's going to get nasty outside this weekend, but why give in to snow panic? There's plenty in of excellent movies in theaters and here at Scarecrow that are worth braving the elements: --The holiday tradition of It's A Wonderful Life at Grand Illusion Cinema starts today! You can never see that film too many times, especially on a big screen and when there's a chance of snow. --Bruce Campbell is in town tonight at the Varsity for screenings of My Name Is Bruce. Also at the Varsity is Lake City, which isn't a documentary about the neighborhood but a film about a man who flees the wrath of drug dealer by returning to his childhood home and estranged mother, played by the always amazing Sissy Spacek and co-starring Rebecca Romijn, Drea de Matteo, Dave Matthews and Barry "Hell, I'd piss on a spark plug if I thought it would do any good" Corbin. --If you're looking for less family drama and more global destruction, The Day The Earth Stood Still is at the Cinerama, the Neptune and in IMAX at Pacific Science Center. --You can also cross another movie off your Award Season checklist with Frost/Nixon at the Meridian. --SIFF Cinema has Sergei Eisenstein's epic Alexander Nevsky and the Saturday Singin' In The Rain screening we've mentioned before. Northwest Film Forum starts its run of Virtual JFK, which Variety calls "an extended glimpse into a bygone era of statesmanship." Sounds like a perfect film to watch in these weeks leading up to Inauguration Day. --There's also the annual Poster Sale at the Seven Gables on Sunday from 10am to 2pm. After your done browsing through the fine art for sale, head down to Cinema Books and get some reading and reference materials for yourself and the film lovers on your gift list. If you are one who retreats inside before the first flake hits the ground, you can always come in tonight and stock up on rentals. We've got three sections of holiday related films to get you in the spirit. You may also enjoy The Dark Knight. Stay warm and happy viewing!
