Z - Here's a review by our colleague Tommy: The 1969 political thriller Z makes its way into the Criterion Collection after a recent restoration and theatrical run. Director Costa-Gavras' landmark film revolves around the assassination of a political leader (the legendary Yves Montand) by a governmental group and the investigation into his death by a determined magistrate (Jean-Louis Trintignant). Based on the 1963 assassination of left-wing Greek politico Gregoris Lambrakis, Greek expatriate Costa-Gavras' film is built out of vitriol and scorn for the military dictatorship which ruled Greece at the time of its production. But the film transcends the specifics of its targets and not only remains relevant today but startlingly immediate. As Trintignant chases after the truth through a maze of facts, alibis and official corruption, he learns that exposing the truth behind the assassination and its cover-up will mean indicting not only certain political players who seem to be above accountability but the entire political system itself. The film asks what is the meaning of justice if the state cannot be called to account. And in the end it shows how even moral victories are easily corrupted. Mikis Theodorakis' uniquely impellent score compliments the vérité cinematography of French New Wave luminary Raoul Coutard to give the hyperstylized film a propulsive and dynamic momentum. Through the sweep of its history and the resonance of its conviction, Z remains compelling, suspenseful, infuriating viewing.
