The Office and other New Releases for September 8th

Here's a list of what's new for the week of September 8th. We begin with a bunch of new TV shows on DVD: THE OFFICE: SEASON FIVE - Get in on the great 'Hilary Swank: Hot or Not?' debate and visit Café Disco in the latest season on DVD. This season includes Holly's unfortunate departure, the return of Toby and Ryan, Phyllis finally spilling the beans about Angela and Dwight, and the best season finale in a long time. The DVD includes the web episodes and lots of other extras. We've also got it on Blu-ray PARKS & RECREATION: SEASON ONE - The creators of the US version of The Office bring us another mockumentary style series. Amy Poehler stars as Leslie Knope, the endlessly enterprising and ambitious middle management civil servant in the parks department in the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana. An opportunity to shine arises when resident Ann Perkins (Rashida Jones) complains about the abandoned construction site by her house, a gigantic hole that her loser boyfriend broke both legs falling into. Leslie makes it her mission to turn the hole into a park and spends the six episodes of the first season awkwardly attempting to do do, with the help and sometimes hindrance of her colleagues Mark (Paul Schneider, who you may remember from All The Real Girls or Lars and the Real Girl) and Tom (Aziz Ansari, who you may have seen on the comedy stages this weekend at Bumbershoot). FRINGE: SEASON 1 - Relief for those twitching through Joshua Jackson withdrawals since the end of Dawson's Creek comes in the form of this X-Files-like show about a team of FBI agents using 'fringe' science to investigate strange happenings around the world. It was co-created by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and J. J. Abrams. NO. 1 LADIES' DETECTIVE AGENCY: SEASON 1 - Jill Scott stars in the show based on the book series by Alexander McCall Smith about a group of women who solve mysteries in Gaborone. (The capitol of Botswana, a country in southern Africa that borders South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and a tiny bit of Zambia. And that's your geography lesson for the day, folks.) CRIMINAL MINDS: SEASON 4 - More FBI investigations, this time of a more psychological nature, starring Joe Mantegna (more with him in a sec), Thomas Gibson, Shemar Moore and A.J. Cook. IMPORTANT THINGS WITH DEMETRI MARTIN: SEASON 1 - The sometimes Daily Show commentator and all-the-time hilarious person Demetri Martin mixes sketch comedy, stand-up and some handy diagrams to convey his clever observations about the world around us. SLEEP DEALER - Read more about this film here. CRANK 2: HIGH VOLTAGE - also on Blu-ray for in-your face hi-def action Three are three new additions to the Criterion Collection this week, all of which are for sale here: THE HUMAN CONDITION - Masaki Kobayahi's existential epic about a well-meaning pacifist thought his struggles to survive the fascist regime of WWII-era Japan. Previously only available on three DVDs, the entire nine and a half hour journey is now all together, newly remastered with extras, including a rare interview with Kobayashi by filmmaker Masahiro Shinoda. THAT HAMILTON WOMAN - Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier star as tragic lovers Lord Horatio Nelson and Lady Hamilton in Alexander Korda's epic love story set during the Napoleonic Wars. The Criterion website states this was Winston Churchill's favorite film, which he claimed to have seen over 80 times. HOMICIDE - David Mamet's 1991 psychological police drama stars Joe Mantegna as a detective who uncovers a wealth of intrigue and suspense while investigating the murder of an elderly Jewish candy-show owner. The DVD includes commentary with Mamet and co-star William H. Macy and an intriguing sounding gag reel. Sony has a collection of films new to DVD called 'Martini Movies.' I'm not sure what martinis have to do with anything but who really needs a reason to mix, stir & sip, right? The latest films in this collection are: MODEL SHOP (1968) - The only American film by Jacques Demy (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg) stars Gary Lockwood as a melancholy man in late 60s LA and Anouk Aimee as the model he stalks around town.
