New Releases for August 18th

SIMPSONS: SEASON 12-After a while the episodes all blend together in a syndicated blob, so we'll let you know Season 12 includes "Lisa The Tree Hugger" ("I'm a level 5 vegan; I don't eat anything with a shadow"), the one where Bart, Milhouse, Nelson and Ralph join The Party Posse (complete with N'Sync cameo!), Homer winning a Pulitzer Prize for his gossip website, the freaky Treehouse of Horror episode where dolphins take over the world, and the "Worse Episode Ever" starring the Comic Book Guy. If you're a fan of Comic Book Guy, you can buy the Limited Edition Collector's Box shaped like his head (it's available in a regular shaped box, too). THE GARDEN-Fresh off its Oscar nomination and a run at Grand Illusion, this powerful documentary follows the farmers at an urban garden in South Central L.A.'s fight against encroaching developers: DEXTER: SEASON 3-Our colleague Kevin says in this month's Seattle Sound magazine: "Somehow, this graphically violent show about a murderer is also one of the lightest, most fun shows on TV." We've got Seasons 1 & 2 for rent if you want to catch up with the tales of a well meaning forensic analyst turned serial killer. SURVEILLANCE-Jennifer Lynch's supernatural thriller following two FBI agents (Julia Ormond and Bill "Dr. Jamison" Pullman) in pursuit of a serial killer who visit a small town to seek assistance from would-be victims. For sale on DVD & Blu-ray in the store and here. LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT (2009)-The horror fan contingency of Scarecrow staffers is rightly wary of remakes, but all who've seen it so far have enjoyed this brutally violent remake of Wes Craven's even more violent original (which is itself a take on Bergman's Virgin Spring). Resident horror enthusiast Bryan says in Seattle Sound magazine: "It's an effective, atmospheric and serious-minded thriller." LAST STARFIGHTER: 25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION-25th ANNIVERSARY EDITION!?!? Holy crap, I'm old. "Greetings Starfighter. You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the Frontier against Xur and the Ko-Dan Armada." Also on Blu-ray so you can see the now entertainingly archaic special effects in high definition. ABSURDISTAN-A small town somewhere in the former Soviet Union is being ravaged by drought, but the men are all too lazy to fix the irrigation line. So what do the women do? They refuse to sleep with them until they get something done. Throw in a prophecy about two young lovers and you've got a charming comedy that's also a refreshing take on the battle of the sexes. IP5-Jean-Jacques Beineix's magical tale of two Parisian street kids and a wise forest spirit finally makes it to DVD. Also on sale here. HANNAH MONTANA: THE MOVIE- TOTAL DRAMA ISLAND: COMPLETE SERIES-Cartoon Network's animated satire of reality TV pits teens against each other in a series of ridiculous challenges. The set also contains Season Two, better known as Total Drama Action. ICONS OF SCI-FI: TOHO COLLECTION-Three films from the studio that unleashed Godzilla: H-Men, Battle In Outer Space and Mothra. TYSON-We refer again to our colleague Bryan and his review of James Toback's film in Seattle Sound magazine: "Tyson is a great subject with many sides to his personality, coming off something like a monster inside a little boy inside an monster...The fighter puts it all out there, not making much of an attempt to justify any of his many mistakes. That makes for a simple but fascinating interview documentary that deftly uses boxing a springboard into universal questions about family, education, talent, success, sex, violence and life." FIVE DEADLY VENOMS-Centipede, Snake, Scorpion, Lizard and Toad combine their unique fighting styles to whomp corruption in this Shaw Brothers/Cheh Chang classic. Also new today: Cheh Chang's Brave Archer and His Mate (dubbed in English). HUSBANDS-New extended cut of John Cassavetes' mostly improvised exploration of marriage, manhood and middle age as told by three friends (Ben Gazzara, Peter Falk & Cassavetes) who embark on a weekend of debauchery and contemplation following the death of a friend. Also for sale here. THICK OF IT: THE SPECIALS (PAL CODE 2)-The highly acclaimed SIFF '09 opening film In The Loop is a spin off of this British TV show satirizing their government. These two hour-long specials pick up from Season 1 (which we have for rent in the British Comedy TV section) with more power-grabbing hijinx. STATE BY STATE: A PANORAMIC PORTRAIT OF AMERICA-One of my favorite recent books is "State By State," featuring essays about each of the 50 states & D.C. written by authors & other natives (Sleater Kinney's Carrie Brownstein does our state proud) striving to "describe America to Americans." In this film spin-off, nineteen of the writers, including Anthony Bourdain, John Hodgman, Susan Orlean, Rick Moody and Alison Bechdel, get together for food, beverages and lively conversation about their states.
