The New Releases for August 4th

You know it's a good week when there are not one but TWO new documentaries about Sasquatch. Here's some of what's new for the first week of August: FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS: SEASON 2-Bret and Jemaine make a musical autobiography, fall for the same girl and meet the Prime Minister of New Zealand in the latest season of their HBO series. Congrats to the show for its Emmy nominations, including Best Comedy Series and Best Actor in a Comedy Series for Jemaine. Here's a taste: TIM & ERIC AWESOME SHOW, GREAT JOB!: SEASON 3-Friends of the store Tim & Eric return for another season of C.O.R.B.S. (cops on recumbent bikes), Tairy Greene's child acting class, Channel 5's celebration of 100 years of Jackie Chan, and more sketch comedy absurdity. PROJECT RUNWAY: SEASON 5-Sorry, Top Chef. While I love to watch your chefs come up with yet another way to cook a scallop, I must admit I'm partial to your now former Bravo show. Tom Colicchio could learn a lot about how to deliver constructive criticism from Tim Gunn. Anyway, this is the season that features the leather-lovin' rocker Stella, self referential Suede, local designer & admitted tanning addict Blayne and Leanne from Portland. You know you want to watch this season again just to watch Kenley's crazy factor rise with each episode. RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN-Dwayne Johnson (you'll always be The Rock in our hearts, Dwyane) stars in Disney's not-exactly-a-remake of their 1975 adventure Escape to Witch Mountain (now available for rent in our Disney Live Action section). In this updated version, two alien kids searching for their spaceship rope in a cab driver (Johnson) and a UFO specialist (Carla Gugino!) into their journey to the mysterious mountain. It's also available on Blu-ray. THE SOLOIST-The based on a true story of a journalist (Robert Downey, Jr.) who befriends a homeless man (Jamie Foxx) and discovers he's a gifted musician with schizophrenia I haven't seen it; it looks like it could be genuinely moving or incredibly schmaltzy or a bit of both. I'm more inclined to think its good due to the presence of co-star Catherine Keener. It's also available on Blu-ray. ICONS OF SCREWBALL COMEDY-Eight classic comedies never before on DVD now available on in a two volume set. Volume One has If You Could Only Cook (1935, starring Jean Arthur & Herbert Marshall), Too Many Husbands (1940, starring Arthur & Fred MacMurray), My Sister Eileen (1942, starring the always radiant Rosalind Russell) and She Wouldn't Say Yes (1945, also starring Russell and Lee Bowman). Volume Two has Theodora Goes Wild (1936, starring Melvyn Douglas and Irene Dunne), Together Again (1944, starring Dunne and Charles Boyer), A Night To Remember (not the Titanic story' this one's from 1942 and stars Loretta Young) and The Doctor Takes A Wife (1940, starring Young and Ray Milland). HARVARD BEATS YALE 29-29-The year is 1968. Amidst the general political tensions of the times, two undefeated Ivy League football rivals meet on the field for one of the most remembered games in the sports' history. The documentary by Kevin Rafferty (The Atomic Café) uses archival footage and new interviews with the players and onlookers (including Harvard alum Tommy Lee Jones) to recreate the fateful day. It's also available on Blu-ray. MUTANT CHRONICLES-In a dark and scary future, Thomas Jane, Ron Perlman, Devon Aoki and John Malkovich defend mankind from the flesh hungry NecroMutants. All those folks are usually pretty badass so I say humanity's in good hands. It's also available on Blu-ray. MYSTERIES OF PITTSBURGH-The summer before he leaves for a college, a young man explores what he really wants from life. Starring Jon Foster, Mena Suvari, Peter Sarsgaard and Nick Nolte as the young man's mobster father. Adapted from the novel by Michael Chabon (Wonder Boys). FRAGMENTS-Witnesses to a horrific murder are left to contemplate their own mortality and existence. Starring Kate Beckinsale, Forest Whitaker, Guy Pearce, Dakota Fanning and Jennifer Hudson. DEMON WARRIORS-A supernatural horror film from Thailand in which a detective goes undercover in the afterlife to defeat a gang of destructive demons. Produced by the same folks who gave us Ong Bak and The Protector. OBESSESED-Go Beyonce! Defend your man from that crazy lady!! NEW FROM THE WARNER BROS.
