That’s right. For those that may have missed it the first time, here is your chance to meet the cast of CINEMATIC TITANIC. Just what is a Cinematic Titanic (henceforth CT) . Well, remember the best show ever created for television? No, not The Wire…the other best show ever. Yeah, with the puppets and bad movies. Right. Mystery Science Theater 3000. The good folks who created and brought you that masterwork of comedy have reformed into CT. Not unlike when William Hartnell transformed into Patrick Troughton who transformed into John Pertwee who transformed into Tom Baker who….well, you get it. This time around, they tour with the movies, riffing them live, before commuting them to their DVD resting place. And who, exactly, makes up Team CT:

Joel ‘Agent J’ Hodgson, creator of MST3k, The TV Wheel and a little known website with ants. As well as a writer, stand-up comedian, and dreamer. And an old friend.

J. Elvis ‘Dr Erharht’ Weinstein, original writer/performer of MST3k, stand-up comedian, and writer for various television shows and other comedians (but not The Simpsons). And an old friend.

Mary Jo ‘Mrs. Forrester’ Pehl, writer/performer of MST3k, NPR contributor, author, raconteur and Jan-In-The-Pan. And an old friend.

Trace ‘Dr. Forrester’ Beaulieu, original writer/performer of MST3k, Freaks and Geeks actor, comic writer, and television producer. And an old friend.

Frank ‘TV’s Frank’ Conniff, writer/performer of MST3k, Invader Zim writer, and Cartoon Dump creator and host. And an old friend.

On June 11th, the CT team will perform TWO shows at The Showbox at the Market, one at 6pm and one at 9:30. Both shows will be different and not available (yet) on DVD. (The Showbox website is a little wonky, so I have provided links to each separate show).

But more importantly, you can get an early shot at meeting the entire team the day before, right here at Scarecrow Video. Last time they were gracious enough to sign most anything, but we will also have their library of riffed movies for sale including the two films they ‘premiered’ the last time they were in town, EAST MEETS WATTS and BLOOD OF THE VAMPIRES. So stop by and say, “Hello” or “Hikeeba” or whatever floats your boat.

When: Thursday, June 10th, 2010 at 7pm

Where: At your local Scarecrow Video

Who: I just got done telling you that, sheesh

Why: Because we love you

How: Now this is just getting silly.

Join us, wont you ?

As I write this, it is a beautiful spring day in Seattle. Seeing the skyline in all its non-cloud enveloped glory always spikes my civic pride and gets me thinking about the history of our fair city. It’s a subject I indulge my interest in with activities such as visits to The Museum of History and Industry, frequent check ins with VintageSeattle.org, and pouring over the pictures in books like Vanishing Seattle. But like any good Scarecrow employee, I prefer to learn everything from the movies.

That’s why I’m looking forward to next Friday, April 23rd, when Scarecrow welcomes director Shaun Scott and his documentary SEAT OF EMPIRE to the store. The film, funded by the Mayor’s Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, begins when Europeans first arrived and goes on to examine the many factors that have shaped the region’s physical and social landscapes:

SEAT OF EMPIRE sings the story of the social and environmental struggles that have shaped Seattle. From the Duwamish to the domed stadium, Bill Boeing to Bill Gates, the IWW and Philippine laborers to the Post-WWII boom that brought Seattle to unprecedented national prominence, SEAT OF EMPIRE explores the cross-sections of environmental sacrifice, military development, and municipal struggles over space and resources. The film is one artist’s contribution to the small but growing canon of poetic reconstructions of our city’s
history…

Charles Mudede’s review in The Stranger paints an excellent picture of what the documentary covers, but here are a few excerpts to give you a better idea of the film’s scope:

This part is about the Denny Regrade, which I’m sure you all know is how several of our big hills were leveled to make room for neighborhoods.

There’s also this intriguing clip which features a brief glimpse of our Roosevelt neighbors Cafe Racer and reveals that the woman for whom the street I live on is named ran a brothel:

I wish Seattle still had a reputation as a “gaudy, wide open bachelor town.”

Shaun Scott will be at Scarecrow on Friday, April 23rd at 7pm to sign copies of Seat of Empire and answer questions about the film. We invite you to stop in and check out this fascinating and remarkable work.

Also, there will be pizza.

We also invite you to revisit this vintage post from our blog all about Seattle on Film and browse our eclectic Seattle Interest rental section. There you’ll find everything from J.P Patches, a documentary about Longacres, and things like<a title="Almost Live!

Scarecrow is home to a collection of over 100,000 films from around the world; some made in far away countries and some right here in our own backyard. Last year’s SIFF hit ZMD: ZOMBIES OF MASS DESTRUCTION is set in lovely Port Gamble where, amongst the humble town folk, a Middle Eastern student has come looking for work, a young man has come home to come out to his parents, and a viral zombie scourge is about to ravage the otherwise peaceful town. Writer/director/Scarecrow customer Kevin Hamedami’s “political zomedy” (a fine combination of humor, satire and gnarly gore) was one of the “Eight Films To Die For” in the After Dark’s Horrorfest 4 earlier this year, and will soon infect the masses on DVD. Join us at the store on TUESDAY, MARCH 23rd at 7pm for the ZMD ON DVD release party! Stars Cooper Hopkins, Janette Armand and Doug Fahl will be here signing copies of the film, chatting with the clientele, and (perhaps) snacking on gummi brains. We’ll have the DVD on sale for just $16.95. So head in, check out the film and support your locally made poli zom com!

Did you miss ZMD at SIFF? Here’s the trailer (but beware–it’s not for the squeamish).

Attention Rat City Rollergirls fans! You’ve been waiting since its World Premiere at the 2007 Seattle International Film Festival, and now we’re happy to announce that Blood on the Flat Track: The Rise of the Rat City Rollergirls is finally coming out on DVD! To celebrate, Scarecrow Video will host directors Lainy Bagwell and Lacey Leavitt along with current & alumni members of the Rat City Rollergirls here to sign DVDs & chat with fans on Tuesday, February 23rd at 7pm.

The documentary profiles the early days of the RCRG from their origins at a White Center roller rink, to the formation of the league and its four signature teams, to their fierce competition in Tuscon against some of the best leagues in the country. It’s not just a behind the scenes look at the the league and the women who skate but also a profile of the passion and politics involved when a group of dedicated individuals create & maintain a grassroots organization. Plus, there’s plenty of tough derby action as these athletes race, block, push, and sometimes flat out fight their way to victory on the track. Please enjoy not one, but two trailers (warning: the first one has some salty language)

And here’s an episode of the MacGuffin Podcast, in which Spencer and BOFT co-director Lacey Leavitt discuss her career in film and the genesis of Blood on the Flat Track. They also get to talking about their favorite guilty viewing pleasures (Viva VHS!) and their DVD picks for the week. We’d like to give a virtual high-5 to Ms. Leavitt for the most concise comment on Michael Bay’s Transformers we’ve heard. You hit the nail right on the head!

Make plans to be here Tuesday night for the DVD release and meet the amazing women behind the movie and the sport. And while you’re here, be sure to check out our ever growing Roller Derby rental section!

We at Scarecrow are honored to once again welcome to the store Thelma Schoonmaker, the triple-Oscar winning film editor of many of Martin Scorsese’s films including Raging Bull, The Aviator, The Departed and the upcoming Shutter Island. She’ll be stopping by the store on Wednesday, February 10th at 2pm. Ms. Schoomaker is in town presenting two films by her husband, legendary British director Michael Powell, at Seattle Art Museum. On Tuesday, February 9th it’s I Know Where I’m Going! (1945) and the following evening it’s The Red Shoes. This is the Seattle premiere of Martin Scorsese’s personal Film Foundation restored 35mm print of The Red Shoes, which he mentioned during his speech accepting the Cecil B. DeMille award at last month’s Golden Globe awards:

Note: If listening to Mr. Scorsese talk about film and film preservation made you tear up a bit (like I did), be sure to check out A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies, in which he takes us through his favorite films and shares their influence on his work. One viewing is roughly equivalent to a quarter of film school.

Both films begin at 7:30pm downtown at the Seattle Art Museum. For ticket information, please visit their website.

To prepare for her visit, here’s footage of Ms. Schoonmaker discussing her career and how she goes about the editing process.

Make plans to take a late lunch, skip class, or leave work early to meet and chat with a modern film legend. We’ll see you here.
