We're throwing our hat into the year-end accolades ring with our Best of 2008 rental section! Scarecrow staffers selected their ten favorite DVDs of last year and put them all in one convenient spot. From the second season of
30 Rock to Criterion's release of
Chungking Express, there's something for everyone to celebrate.
The top five vote getters were
The Dark Knight,
Wall-E,
The Wire: Season 5,
No Country For Old Men and
Iron Man. You may be wondering how
NCFOM ends up on a Best Of 2008 list, but it was released on DVD March 11th, shortly after its Oscar win for Best Picture. This year's Oscar nominations will be announced
TOMORROW (Thursday) at 5:30am (so you'll have to get to bed right after
Lost tonight). We expect to hear
Wall-E called out a few times and will keep our fingers crossed for
The Dark Knight to get more than just a much deserved nomination and expected win for Heath Ledger.
Other films we'll possibly hear announced tomorrow that are residing in our Best of 2008 section include current favorite for Best Documentary Feature
Man on Wire,
Happy Go Lucky (featuring Golden Globe winner Sally Hawkins), Werner Herzog's exploration of Antarctica
Encounters at the End of the World, potential screenplay nominee
In Bruges and
The Visitor, featuring Richard Jenkins' much lauded performance.
Vicky Cristina Barcelona, another possible nominee in the acting categories, will be out on January 27th. Don't forget, every nominated film you see gives you a more informed opinion for your office
Oscar Pool important film discussion (doesn't every workplace have them?).
