THE WILD PARROTS OF TELEGRAPH HILL follows Mark Bittner, an aging bohemian whose search for spirituality and substance in life leads him to the flocks of rambunctious urban parrots that make their home in the green niches of San Francisco. Through his eyes, we see individual personalities within the flock, their relationships between each other and their collective struggle to survive in the city. The meanings Bittner found led him to write his first book, The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill: A Love Story With Wings.
Filmmaker Judy Irving won an Emmy and the Grand Prize at the Sundance Film Festival for her documentary Dark Circle on the governments support of nuclear power and proliferation. Already an avid bird lover, she heard about Mark Bittner and the parrots from friends. What began as a childrens fable starring parrots became a documentary on the relationship between Bittner and the birds and the connection between the human and animal worlds.
THE WILD PARROTS OF TELEGRAPH HILL was released in theaters in early 2005, and has since gone on to become one of the most successful documentaries of all time, winning both critical praise and box office success. San Jose Mercury News describes it as that rare documentary that has romance, comedy, surprise ending that makes you feel as if you could fly out of the theater.
