New Releases for the first week of ROCKtober!

The first week of October brings a full harvest of new & interesting titles to our shelves. Here's a list: ANVIL: THE STORY OF ANVIL--This spring's big hit is now on DVD... YEAR ONE NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD - And now a review by our colleague Kevin Clarke: In the early 1970s, around the same time Hollywood was going through its own creative revolution, Australian cinema also experienced a growth-spurt of sorts, albeit a far less classy one. When Australian ratings restrictions were loosened, it opened the floodgates for a slew of trashy Aussie fare filled to the brim with blood, boobs, car chases, nastiness, and even more blood and boobs. Not Quite Hollywood gleefully documents this period with enlightening interviews from some luminaries of the era, including 'Ozploitation' directors Brian Trenchard-Smith (The Man From Hong Kong, Dead End Drive-In), Richard Franklin (Patrick, Road Games), and George Miller (Mad Max, The Road Warrior) and American actors Jamie Lee Curtis (Road Games), Steve Railsback (Escape 2000) and Dennis Hopper (Mad Dog Morgan). It blasts its way thorough the sexploitation, horror and action genres and features a wealth of violent, sleazy clips, with occasional hyperbolically reverent commentary from human film-encyclopedia Quentin Tarantino, while keeping a somewhat mocking, self-effacing attitude towards the material. In the end, the films from this period created a collective vision of Australia as a horny, naked, beer-swilling, violent, apocalyptic nightmare wasteland, for better or for worse. MY LIFE IN RUINS - My Big Fat Greek Wedding star Nia Vardalos plays a despondent tour guide who travels to Greece to find her spirit, and perhaps someone to love. Has the added bonus of co-star Richard Dreyfuss. SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS - Disney's first animated feature makes its Blu-ray debut in a new Diamond Edition. Now see if you can wrap your head around this: the Blu-ray edition comes with a regular DVD, and the regular DVD comes with a Blu-ray disc. They're both the same price and on sale here online and in the store. NATIONAL PARKS: AMERICA'S BEST IDEA - Ken Burns' latest epic documentary chronicles the history of our National Parks. You can celebrate their majestic beauty on Blu-ray too. TRICK ‘R TREAT - Our colleague Bryan says: Despite being jerked around for two years and now dumped straight to video, the word from film festival and Comic Con screenings is extremely positive on this Halloween themed anthology horror film. The director is Michael Dougherty, one of the writers of X-Men 2 and Superman Returns, and it's produced by Bryan Singer. RED DWARF: BACK TO EARTH - The special that aired in the UK this Easter finally makes its way stateside, delivering Lister and the crew back to Earth and into the real world. The Director's Cut DVD has the usual compliment of Dwarf extras: a making-of documentary, commentaries and smeg ups and more. THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE (PAL CODE 2) MIRAGEMAN - Once again, our colleague Bryan: Tired of waiting for Tony Jaa and friends to come out with more Thai action movies? Let me turn you around and point you toward Chile, where Marko Zaror is quickly becoming an action movie icon in his own right. After stunt doubling The Rock in The Rundown Zaror began to star in energetic, enthusiastic martial arts films like 2006's Kiltro and this, his take on super heroes. AUDITION - A new two-disc Collector's Edition of Takashi Miike's disturbing and gruesome romance has new commentary tracks, interviews & more. It's also now available on Blu-ray. ESTHER WILLIAMS FILM COLLECTION VOLUME 2 - Includes Thrill of a Romance (1945), Fiesta (1947), This Time for Keeps (1947), Pagan Love Song (1950), Easy to Love (1946) and the Busby Berkeley dream of Million Dollar Mermaid (1952). Go ahead and sing it, 'My Zombie's on Broadway!' HOW TO BE A MAN: CLASSIC EDUCATIONAL SHORTS VOL. 1 - An entertaining and informative collection of shorts from the 1940s through the 1970s. We'll be getting HOW TO BE A WOMAN soon. MARLENE - Actor/director Maximilian Schell's series of revealing interviews with Marlene Dietrich finally arrives on DVD. IMAGINE THAT - Another family friendly Eddie Murphy vehicle. According to IMDb, it's about, 'a financial executive who can't stop his career downspiral is invited into his daughter's imaginary world, where solutions to his problems await.' THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS: HERE COMES SCIENCE!
