We are open seven days a week, 363 days a year. Our hours are:
Sunday through Thursday: 11am-10pm
Friday & Saturday: 11am-11pm
We are closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Occasionally we will close early for store meetings, on holidays like Christmas Eve and the Fourth of July, or during freak-of-nature events like a Snowpocalypse. Look for signs posted in the front door windows and around the store that will alert you to any early closures. We'll post that information on this site as well.
Video rental rates:
New Releases: $4.50 for 2 days
Catalog Titles: $4.50 for 7 days
Family New Releases/Second Take (older New Releases): $3 for 4 day
10+ hour titles, box sets or full TV series: $11 for 7 days
Video Game rental rates: $7 for 4 days or $9.50 for 7 days
Machine rentals: Multi-system (PAL, SECAM, NTSC) region-free DVD players, multi-system VHS players, Blu-Ray disc players, and for you old school folks, VCRs and LaserDisc players--$4 a day Machine rental rates are just $4 a day. Machines do require a security deposit to rent. Please ask us in the store for details.
There are some exceptions to these pricings. Any title that doesn't fit these price points will have a sticker on the front of the box showing its rental cost. If you have any questions about a title's rental rate, feel free to ask us in the store.
You sure can! We sell 10 rental credits for $40, a savings of .$50 a rental or $5 total. We just add the punches (as we call them) to your account and use them as you go. Please note: A 'punch' is worth $4.50, which covers the price of a standard rental. An $11 rental will use three punches, while a $3 rental will use one. You may want to pay for these rentals separately and save your punches. We sometimes offer coupons for even cheaper punch cards. Stay tuned to this website for announcements on sales & coupons.
All you need to join is a picture ID and a Visa, Mastercard, or American Express credit card or a debit card with a Visa or MasterCard logo. If you don't have a credit card, you can still open an account but you will need to leave a cash deposit for each title you rent. There is a minimum of $25 cash deposit for each title. To sign you up, we'll go over some of the polices with you, get your address and phone number and then you're good to go.
You do not need a rental account to by new & used titles. However, you do get a FREE RENTAL with every new DVD & Blu-ray purchase. If you have an account with us, we ring up all your purchases on it and save the punches for when you're ready to rent.
Yes, you can add as many friends or family to your rental account as you want. Please remember that you are responsible for ALL of the additional people on your account. This means that if all six of your roommates and your little brother go on a vacation to Denmark for a month and forget to return their rentals, you are ultimately responsible for all of the resulting late fees-that's an extreme scenario but something to consider. Adding users to your account also gives he/she permission to use the credit card on file for deposits and rentals. If you have a user under the age of 18 who does not have a photo ID, we can establish a password for rental and establish rating restrictions.
We don't have a membership card; just bring in a valid picture ID and be ready to show it to us when you rent. If someone is authorized to rent on your account , he or she will need to give us your name (the name your account is under) and have his/her picture ID ready. If you haven't rented in awhile, please be ready to update your credit card number, address and phone number. You do not need a rental membership to buy merchandise.
Rental items are due by 8:00pm. There is a one hour grace period - so 'technically' rentals are due back by 8:59pm. At 9:00pm the rental(s) will show up as late on your account.
Late fees are the FULL rental cost per day*, per title. For example, if you have two $4.50 rentals out and are two days late, your late fee would be $18. We do understand that occasionally you won't be able to make it in on time. You are always welcome to bring late titles to the attention of a manager.
*Late fees for $11 rentals are only $5.50 per day, video game late fees are $2 a day.
Once late items are returned to the store, all late fees are charged to the credit card on file. If you'd prefer we not charge your card, please return your late titles to someone at the counter and you can pay how you'd like from there. We must collect any outstanding late fees before you are able to rent anything else.
The easiest way to avoid late fees is by renewing your rentals. Just call the store before 9:00pm on the due date and we'll check them out to you again. Standard rental fees apply when titles are renewed and you can pay via the credit card you have on file or use your pre-purchased credits. Titles on reserve for other members cannot be renewed.
When the store is closed, we open up the safe, secure night-drop located in our front doors that accommodate DVD and VHS. LaserDiscs, machines, and some of the larger multiple-disc sets must be returned during our normal business hours.
If you need to know when your rentals are due, just give us a call. Our phone number can be found on the security sticker on your DVD (check the middle ring) or VHS/Laserdisc/machine (the shiny sticker). Please call during regular business hours and we'll let you know when to bring things back. If you're renting and would like a receipt with your due dates on it, just let us know and we'll print one out.
Here are the details for everyone's favorite rent-one-get-one-free money saving day: The free rental must be of equal or lesser value (yes, you can pay for an $11 rental and get another $11 rental for free). You can only get ONE New Release per pair. It's good for up to five pairs per day. The 2 for 1 deal does not apply to video games or machine rentals. The offer is good for the initial rental period only-titles cannot be renewed at the 2 for 1 price. It can not be combined with any other offers. Feel free to ask at the counter if you have any questions regarding the 2 for 1 rentals.
Titles labeled RENTAL BY APRROVAL are either extremely rare or very out-of-print and require a cash or credit deposit to be rented. You'll find the deposit amount either on the spine or on the back of the video. The typical deposit is about $200 - we do have just a few films that require deposits that are over $1000. By requiring deposits on these titles, we're able to keep them in our inventory and available for customers (as opposed to finding them for sale on Ebay). The deposit amount reflects how timely and costly it would be for us to replace that title if it was damaged or stolen. Please feel comfortable renting these titles - we so very, very RARELY have to claim deposits and are well aware of normal rental 'wear and tear'. Don't panic if something happens to your RBA rental. Just bring it in and let us know the situation. A note to collectors: We do not sell titles from our rental inventory, so please don't offer.
You have two deposit options:
1) Credit - We run an authorization on your credit or debit card for the deposit amount. An authorization is a quick check with your bank or credit card company to see if your card has the amount balance available. Your card is never charged and the authorization will not show up on your bank or credit card statement. Banks do freeze the deposit amount while processing, so you will not have access to those funds/credit during that time (this is especially important for debit card users). The authorization is automatically removed from your card in about seven business days by your bank / credit company (some companies may take less or more time), regardless of when you return the rental. Don't worry, if you're a day late, we aren't going to charge you for the deposit.
2) Cash - You can leave us cold hard cash in the amount of the deposit of the RBA'd title. We'll give you a receipt for the deposit. When you return it, make sure to bring your receipt with you. Bring the rental(s), the receipt and a picture ID up to the counter and we'll return your money. We will not return cash deposits without a picture ID and the receipt from the rental.
Ack, we're sorry about that! We regularly check our rentals for scratches & defects we think might interrupt your viewing. If you experience a problem, please note the chapter (if it's a DVD) or around where in the movie/TV show the problem occurred-for example, 'It froze right before they go into the Fire Swamp'. When you return it, please bring it up to the counter and let us know what's up. If you're on the go and/or need to return it in our after hours drop, please tuck in a note explaining the problem. Any information we can get as to what happened and where it happened is helpful and much appreciated.
We do not rent videos or machines through the mail. However, you are welcome to mail us back video rentals. Please make sure to pack them well and opt for insurance if you decide to do so. Please note that we will charge late fees if the titles do not arrive back to the store by the due date.
You can reserve any catalog title or machine up to two months in advance. This is especially helpful if you have a syllabus and a lot of movies you need to watch for school. We do not currently have the capability to reserve titles online, but you can reserve rentals in person or over the phone.
If you no longer need a rental you reserved, please call and cancel your reservation as soon as possible. We do not put reservations on New Releases or titles that have not yet been released for rent. Depending on availability, we may be able to hold a New Release for you if you're on your way here. Just give us a call...
It is! You'll find it here.
If you're struggling to remember something you saw just snippets of twenty years ago and all your Internet keyword searches haven't revealed the title, feel free to give us a call or email us at email@example.com. We'll do our best to help you figure it out.
Why yes we do! We have an eclectic selection of hundreds of new and used titles for sale in our store. We always price our new DVDs for sale AT LEAST 10% below the suggested retail value and give a free rental with each new DVD/Blu-ray purchase-that's like taking another $4.50 off the sale price. We can also special order most anything in print.
There are many titles, including Criterion titles and Korean dramas, available right here on our website. You can purchase items online and have them shipped anywhere in the world or pick them up right here at Scarecrow.
If you're looking for rare items for sale, visit our store's Used Sales inventory or check out http://www.amazon.com/shops/scarecrowvideo
In addition to the savings you get when you pre-pay for rentals and the highly popular 2 for 1 Movie Rental Wednesday, we have coupons & other deals available. Check out the current Chinook Book for savings on rentals and used sales items. If you're a member of KEXP, just show you're membership card and you'll get an automatic 2 for 1 rental (some restrictions apply). We also have deals for members of KPLU, Henry Art Museum, and the Alliance Francaise de Seattle-check your membership information for details. You should also keep an eye out for coupons & offers in our weekly ad in The Stranger, on our Twitter & Facebook pages, and on Foursquare
With just about 110,000 titles and an increasingly small amount of storage room, it can feel like it. By the way, that's 110,000 actual individual titles, not four copies of Akira Kurosawa's RAN counting as four titles. We do our best to have a comprehensive collection but if you ever find we don't have something you're looking for, please let us know. We'll do our best to find it.
You'll find a long but hopefully helpful list of the latest additions to the Scarecrow shelves posted every Tuesday afternoon here on our blog. You can visit the New Release archives here.
