Since MadameCrow was so kind to share her selections from the last year of DVD releases, I thought that I too would contribute to the festivities. My list this year could have very easily been all television series released on DVD. Luckily my cohorts at Scarecrow have good taste and the majority of my favorites were picked, even if I’m not the person who picked them.
My favorite TV on DVD picks were:
Stella- Michael, Michael, and Dave are three of the funniest comedians in entertainment today. Their absurd style is infectious and brilliant. The show has some of the most well executed guest appearances on any show I’ve ever seen. Ed Norton showing up in the first episode is a prime example of learning to expect absolutely anything from this show. There is also a Stella shorts dvd that I’ve only seen available at Scarecrow. Itis even more uproarious, as it doesn’t hold back on a variety of gags and has a charming lack of refinement.
Veronica Mars Season 2 – The second season of this show was fun and interesting. Did they get into alot of teenage melodrama? Yes. But was it worth it to sift through a good murder mystery? Defintely. And it doen’t hurt that you get to enjoy Kristen Bell over and over again. That’s not how it sounds.
Doctor Who Season 1 – This new incarnation of Doctor Who is great, this time being told more from the perspective of his companion Rose Tyler. Chris Eccleston is great as the Doctor, playing it very goofy and light, and Billie Piper is great in her role as average Londoner turned time traveler. The first two seasons as a whole feel more like Rose Tyler’s story than the Doctor’s. David Tennant definitely outshines Eccleston, but you gotta be thankful he did the show and helped revitalize the franchise. The best episodes are “Dalek”, “Father’s Day” (Where Rose tries to stop her father’s death), and “Empty Child”. “Empty Child” is by far one of the creepiest episodes of science fiction television I’ve seen in the last few years. I encourage you to check this out as well as the second season that just released on DVD featuring the superior Doctor David Tennant and Torchwood vol.1, a spinoff from the second season’s great x-files esque gov’t agency.  This show is great for long time Who fans and newcomers alike.
Also awesome: Deadwood Season 2, Office Season 2, Venture Bros., and the Wire Season 3.
For movies I’m going with I’ll have comment cards in front of my picks at the store. But for those who are wondering they are:
Wedding Crashers, Seven Samurai, Clerks 2, Final Fantasy Advent Children, and the neo-noirs Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang and Brick.
